Potential Landing Spots for Elite Giants' Defender Kayvon Thibodeaux cover image
Roundtable's Matt Schmidt discusses a possible trade between the New York Giants and the San Francisco 49ers.

With all the chatter about who’s the starting quarterback for the New York Giants, Big Blue needs to figure out what to do with one of their talented defensive players.

New York Giants defensive end, Kayvon Thibodeaux is due for another contract, and it’ll likely be a lucrative one. However, given the stage that the Giants are in, do they really want to pay a hefty contract to him?

Thibodeaux has been fine more or less in the three seasons he’s been with the Giants. His sophomore season, he racked up a career high 11.5 sacks, however the following season battled through injuries.

One season isn’t enough for a team to empty millions of dollars for. The talent is evident, the execution has been hit or miss.

New York already picked up its club option for next year for Thibodeaux that amounts to $14 million. But if there’s ever a time to pull the trigger on trade, now’s the time.

Our Matthew Schmidt covered it in depth. The San Francisco 49ers just lost their superstar defensive end Nick Bosa to his second torn ACL in his career.

Bosa, despite the elite talent, has two serious knee injuries in his career, and for the Niners, you have to wonder how they can cover themselves.

Niners head coach Kyle Shanahan was recently asked about having to replace someone of Bosa’s caliber.

"You don't just replace a guy like Nick. ... Everyone's got to continue to get better at everything. It’s the same thing I'd be preaching if we did have Nick, too. When you lose your better players, it gets harder, but I also expect throughout this year all of our players to get better as it goes. … We'll look at trades like we always do. But, there's got to be trade options that make sense for you and another team, but you can't just do that stuff just to do it."

Which is why Thibodeaux going there makes a ton of sense.

Bleacher Report suggests that a possible return for a Thibodeaux trade would be either a starting player or a 2026 second round pick.

The fourth year pro primarily plays on the right side off the line, where he can instantly get slotted in.

Originally, the right side would’ve been given to either Bosa or first round draft pick Mykel Williams, but Bosa can play on either side.

For now, Williams seems to be a solid answer for the loss of an All-Pro. But if San Francisco wants to bring someone in who has the potential to rack up double digit sacks, Thibodeaux seems like he’s right there for the taking – for the right price of course.

Another option could be the Detroit Lions, who currently, the defense has been a bit underwhelming since prrevious defensive coordinator Aaron Glenn moved on to coach the New York Jets.

Kelvin Sheppard, who has served as Detroit's linebackers coach for five seasons, is now manning the defense, and there have been some growing pains, allowing the 23rd most points per game.

Detroit is overjoyed to have defensive end Aidan Hutchinson back after a gruesome injury last season, and Al-Quadin Muhammad was one of the bright spots in Monday Night Football's victory against the Ravens.

But adding Thibodeaux could add another dimension to a pass rush that's already ranking third in the NFL.

If Detroit is determined to make a Super Bowl run like it has been, a second round pick won't mean much to them.
