The 2025 NFL season is finally underway, which means New York Giants' fans are beginning to see the team's running back position in action.
After general manage Joe Schoen decided to let star running back Saquon Barkley walk in free agency two offseason ago, the Giants rolled with a backfield of 2024 fifth-round pick Tyrone Tracy Jr. and veteran Devin Singletary last season. And while Singletary did not play a significant role on offense, Tracy quickly established himself as a perfect third-down receiving threat out of the backfield for the Giants.
This led to the franchise having to find an additional running back in the 2025 NFL Draft, which ultimately ended up becoming former Arizona State standout and fourth-round pick Cam Skattebo. The 23-year-old rushed for 4,386 yards and 43 touchdowns during his four years at the college level, and his "bruiser" rushing style was perfect alongside Tracy.
However, head coach Brian Daboll primarily used Tracy in the team's week one contest against the Washington Commanders, as Tracy ended with eight carries compared to Skattebo's two carries. But this would quickly change in week two against the Dallas Cowboys when Skattebo finished with 11 carries for 45 yards and one touchdown, while Tracy totaled just five attempts on the ground.
The dip in production could have been a result of a calf injury that has limited Tracy in practice before week three, but the sudden change in snap counts could have an impact for the rest of the season.
With Tracy having familiarity in Daboll's offense, this could have been a key reason why the second-year running back took a majority of the touches in week one. But Skattebo's usage in week two paints a clearer picture to how the coaching staff will use both running backs in the future.
Skattebo's hard-nose rushing style allows for him to be a terrific early-down running back for the Giants, as he gives the offense a playmaker that can excel in-between tackles. This, along with his impressive contact balance that he continues to display makes him a prime candidate to take over a majority of the workload on the ground.
As for Tracy, his current skillset is more suited for a role as a halfback that can break off big runs and be a great pass catcher on third down. Before he was Purdue's lead back in 2023, Tracy was a wide receiver, which played a major factor in his development as a weapon in the passing game.
It's clear how the Giants envisioned the roles of the team's young running back duo for this season after two weeks - Skattebo will eventually take over as the lead rusher on early downs, while Tracy can be used as a change-of-pace runner and an effective weapon on third down. This does not mean that either player can switch roles at any point, but New York will likely stick to these roles for a majority of the season when both running backs are healthy.
