Facing a must-win Week 4, the Green Bay Packers debut a revamped offensive line to shield Jordan Love. Meanwhile, Jonathan Gannon and the defense must get after the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and rookie undrafted quarterback Jalon Daniels.
It's Week 4 of the 2026 NFL season and the Green Bay Packers are already facing a must-win game.
That's life when you're 1-2 and have featured perhaps one of the worst positional units in recent memory. That would be the offensive line, which was so bad through the first three weeks that not only did it give up historically bad pressure numbers, but general manager Brian Gutekunst had to overhaul it.
Three veterans, Kevin Zeitler, Laken Tomlinson and Mekhi Becton, were brought in to stabilize things and perhaps help the Packers turn this ship around.
That's how bad the Thursday Night Football loss to the Atlanta Falcons was in Week 3. The defense wasn't clear of blame, either. They gave up 242 rushing yards to the Falcons, including 194 yards and two touchdowns to Bijan Robinson.
It was bad, but the Packers do have a chance to move on and at least even things up at 2-2 with a win over the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in Week 4.
It's a road game at Raymond James Stadium, but the Packers are slight favorites. The odds mean nothing with this team, though. The Packers have the potential to be a Super Bowl squad. They also have looked like a bottom-tier team in the league.
Here's what they need to do to pick up a win in this one and at least taste the relief of being .500.
Key #1: The Packers must protect Jordan Love
It's been bad. So bad, in fact, that even a football layman can see how inept the Packers offensive line has been through the first three weeks of play.
The numbers back up the eye test as well.
Quarterback Jordan Love has been hit 20 times and is on pace to be hit 113 times this season, which is a pace sure to get him injured. This offensive line unit, before the overhaul, had given up 51 total pressures and 21 knockdowns.
Whoever is out there on the offensive line, there has to be a concentrated effort on keeping it simple, making the right play and giving Love some time.
Matt LaFleur can help Love out by adopting the quick game into the gameplan. One has to wonder if either Zeitler or Tomlinson can get out there on quick notice and at least provide some veteran presence. Even if they don't know 95-percent of the playbook just yet, they've got to be better than what we've seen so far.
“It’s just a matter getting to work, seeing how fast those guys can pick up the offense,” Love said of the new offensive linemen, per the Associated Press. “I think at the end of the day, putting the best five out there and there’s always going to be some competition in those positions, so do whatever the team feels best at that position.”
Key #2: The Packers must get Tucker Kraft involved early and often
Tight end Tucker Kraft is coming off a torn ACL that he suffered in November of last season, but he's now played three games and seems to be up to speed.
The problem? The numbers just aren't there yet. He's caught nine passes for 106 yards, averaging 11.8 yards per catch, but he hasn't found the end zone. He's also way behind in targets (17) compared to Matthew Golden (30) and Christian Watson (29).
Kraft has the potential to be one of the top tight ends in the league, but the Packers need to get him going.
This game would be a great opportunity to force feed him the ball. He can also help with the quick passing game, so it's a win-win for both him and Love.
Key #3: The Packers must get pressure on Tampa Bay QB Jalon Daniels
Green Bay Packers defensive coordinator Jonathan Gannon surveys a joint practice with the Arizona Cardinals on Wednesday, Aug. 26, 2026, at Ray Nitschke Field in Ashwaubenon, Wisconsin. USA TODAY Network via Reuters Connect. For as bad as things look for the Pack right now, the Buccaneers are in an even worse place. They're 0-3 and without starting quarterback Baker Mayfield for the next few weeks due to a dislocated thumb.
What that means in this game is that undrafted free agent rookie Jalon Daniels will get the start at quarterback.
Daniels played six years for the Kansas Jayhawks and was a good college quarterback, but he's getting his first NFL start against defensive coordinator Jonathan Gannon, who won't be afraid to throw exotic looks and pressures.
For as bad as the Packers' offensive line has been, Tampa's has had similar struggles. They lead the league in sacks given up with 13 and Mayfield was sacked six times in Week 3.
Gannon has a chance to really let his defense shine, but to do that, he'll have to dial up the pressure on Daniels and the Tampa Bay offensive line.
