Gritty defense and special teams heroics secured a messy road victory. From clutch rookie kicking to defensive superstars, these five standouts fueled the Green Bay Packers' narrow escape in Tampa.

You don't apologize for a win in the NFL. Whether it was by one point or 100, winning in this league is tough — and that's especailly true for the road team.

And yet, it's hard to come away from the Green Bay Packers' 17-14 Week 4 win over the Tampa Bay Buccaneers feeling great.

Improving to 2-2 is certainly better than falling to 1-3, but the "battle of the bays" did not look like a game between two playoff teams.

The Packers almost blew a double-digit fourth-quarter lead, yet again, and they struggled with things like turnovers and (once again) penalties.

And yes, the defense forced two turnovers of their own, not even including the gutsy turnover on downs that won the game.

Rookie undrafted free agent quarterback Jalon Daniels had the Buccaneers in a position to beat the Packers on that last drive, though, and that doesn't feel good. The Packers also came away with zero points and two fourth quarter trips onto the Tampa Bay side of the field (including one trip into the red zone) because of a costly goal-line fumble and a bad interception from Jordan Love.

It wasn't pretty, but again, a win is a win. Let's give these guys some credit (for now) and shout out the five stars of the game in this one for the Pack.

Star #5: Trey Smack hit a 58-yarder for the Packers

In a three-point win, special teams made the difference for the Packers. Tampa head coach Todd Bowles actually "iced" kicker Trey Smack in the waning seconds of the first half and he missed his initial look at the 58-yarder heading into halftime.

The rookie got another chance and hit a line drive through the uprights that was steady and true.

Those were three massive points for the Packers and that was a big-time kick from a rookie playing near his old backyard. He played college ball for the Florida Gators from 2022 to 2025.

Star #4: Tucker Kraft seems to slowly be getting back to elite form

Tucker Kraft still doesn't seem 100 percent, and the Packers have had a hard time getting him consistently involved in the game plan for a full 60 minutes.

There was a concerted effort to get him involved in the first half, though, and Kraft ended up coming away with six catches for 42 yards and a touchdown. He would have had a second touchdown grab as well, but he dropped a no-doubter on a corner fade early in the second quarter.

Star #3: Matthew Golden got back into the end zone for the Packers

After being kept out of the end zone for the entirety of his rookie regular season, Matthew Golden has now found it twice in the past two weeks.

The aforementioned play that Kraft dropped? Golden got a similar look not that long after and he made a beautiful catch before getting his two feet in for a fourth-down touchdown grab.

Golden is quickly living up to his billing as the 23rd overall pick in the 2025 NFL Draft. He caught three passes for 21 yards and a touchdown in this one.

Star #2: Edgerrin Cooper played like a man possessed until he got injured

Let's enjoy what we saw from Edgerrin Cooper in this one, because he's likely been lost for the season with an Achilles injury. Before that injury, he played like a beast and looked every bit the All-Pro many expected him to be this season.

Despite leaving the game early, Cooper led the team in tackles with nine and he also notched one interception, one quarterback hit, one pass defended and one sack.

In what has become the Packers' injury season from hell, losing Cooper for an extended period is par for the course.

Star #1: Evan Williams was all over the field for the Packers

Speaking of All-Pro seasons, Evan Williams is well on his way towards one and he had yet another stellar game for the Packers.

He finished this one with seven tackles, one sack, one tackle for loss, two passes defended, two quarterback hits and an interception.

Williams also made game-sealing play on fourth quarter for the Pack.

He's a superstar, and he's a ton of fun to watch.
