A former quarterback for the Green Bay Packers called for Matt LaFleur to be fired after losing to the Vikings.
Entering Week 1 of the 2026 NFL season, there was hope surrounding the Green Bay Packers. That hope had to do with fans believing things could change from last season.
Far too often during the 2025 campaign, the Packers blew leads late in games to lose. That was seen in the Wild Card playoff matchup against the Chicago Bears when Green Bay collapsed after leading 21-3 at halftime.
Unfortunately, Matt LaFleur and company showed that they haven't learned a thing.
Despite holding a late 22-10 lead over the Vikings, the Packers found a way to lose. Not only did they lose, they actually ended up being blown out by a final score of 39-22. Green Bay lost the fourth quarter 22-0 to a team that lost its starting quarterback in the first quarter.
There is nothing that can ease the pain of the loss. All that can be done is to accept that this version of the Packers is no different than any LaFleur team that has shown an inability to close out football games.
Following the loss, a former Green Bay quarterback took to social media to call for LaFleur and others to be fired. Kurt Benkert posted a two-word message that called for the Packers to make some aggressive changes.
"Clean house," Benkert wrote on X.
LaFleur has been a decent regular season head coach since joining Green Bay. However, the fact of the matter is that his career was carried early by Aaron Rodgers.
He has compiled a 76-41-1 record thus far.
In the playoffs, the Packers have failed to have legitimate success under LaFleur. He has gone 3-6 in those games. Outside of Rodgers' time with LaFleur, Green Bay has not made it past the Divisional Round of the NFC playoff picture.
Over the last few years, the Packers have won nine games in 2025, 11 games in 2024, and nine games in 2023. They went 8-9 in 2022.
While there is no denying that Green Bay has the roster talent to be a Super Bowl contender, there is true doubt about LaFleur's ability to lead them there. Not only does nothing seem to be changing, the doubt surrounding the team continues getting worse.
Hopefully, the Packers can turn things around in Week 2 against the New York Jets. Losing in Week 1 doesn't ruin a season. But, the frustration is mounting surrounding Green Bay and the calls for LaFleur to be fired are back and louder than ever.
At the end of the day, the frustration is warranted. Changes need to be made if things don't improve dramatically throughout the remainder of the season.
