Losing their backup quarterback, the Green Bay Packers skipped the draft's QB talent, leaving Jordan Love's safety net perilously thin.

Green Bay Packers Have 1 Obvious Problem After 2026 NFL Draft

The Green Bay Packers lost several key components of their playoff team this offseason.

Former Packers assistant general manager Jon-Eric Sullivan and defensive coordinator Jeff Haffley bolted to Miami to earn job promotions with the Dolphins.

Haffley also convinced linebackers coach Sean Duggan to become the new Miami defensive coordinator.

In free agency, the "Packers South" took another key player, adding quarterback Malik Willis. Willis showed flashes of being a promising starter during his time in Green Bay.

Willis gave the Packers arguably the best backup situation in the league. After seeing what happened to the Denver Broncos in the AFC championship without Bo Nix, backups can be a big deal.

The Packers entered the 2026 NFL Draft knowing backup quarterback was a position of need. However, Green Bay didn't add a quarterback with one of its six selections, choosing to boost the trenches and secondary.

ESPN's Rob Demovsky noted that the backup quarterback position is now a question mark this offseason following the draft.

"General manager Brian Gutekunst didn't draft a quarterback," Demovsky wrote. "And although he didn't rule out acquiring one at some point before the season, the backup spot behind Jordan Love is far from settled after losing Willis to the Dolphins in free agency.

"They signed journeyman Desmond Ridder late last season and added free agent Kyle McCord in the offseason. Could one of them do what Willis did and help the Packers win games if Love gets hurt?"

Gutekunst is hoping someone steps up to become the next Willis.

"That'd be nice," Gutekunst said. "I'm excited about the competition in that room, and we'll see if we add to it along the way.”

"But it's a really important thing for us. Jordan, the last two years, has missed some time, and we've needed somebody to come in there and play at a high level to help win those games, so whoever's called upon, we're going to expect that. And when you lose a guy like Malik, it is something you're going to have to replace, and we're going to try to do that."

Green Bay did sign undrafted rookie free agent Kyron Drones out of Virginia Tech. He was a dual-threat quarterback in college.

However, he'll likely be a developmental project for the Packers. It's unclear if the team has someone to turn to if Love gets hurt in Week 1.
