Green Bay Packers running back Josh Jacobs faces a high-stakes return against the Detroit Lions.
The Green Bay Packers were thrilled to learn that Josh Jacobs would be coming off the Commissioner's Exempt List with a Week 7 showdown looming against the Detroit Lions.
Returning to play an NFC North rival, on the road, would be quite the ask for the 28-year-old.
Jacobs has dealt with a lot in his recent domestic alteration, and head coach Matt LaFleur had to break it all down in his press conference on Wednesday, Oct. 21.
Seeing as Jacobs was cleared to return by the NFL, there's no reason for the Packers not to have him go out there and play.
That said, Green Bay only has two full days of practice this week, so ESPN's Rob Demovsky posed the question to LaFleur: Is that enough?
Packers aren't committing one way or another
"We'll see. We'll work through it," LaFleur told Demovsky.
Earlier in the day on Good Morning Football, Ian Rapoport said he "expects" Jacobs to play against the Lions on Sunday, Oct. 25.
While that doesn't fully go against what LaFleur said, this could be a case where the Packers are holding some things close to their chest.
Jacobs hasn't appeared in a game since the Chicago Bears' wild comeback in the Wild Card round on January 10.
He hasn't been able to practice with the team until Monday, Oct. 19, one day after they crushed the Dallas Cowboys on Sunday Night Football.
Keep in mind, the Packers return to Thursday Night Football on Oct. 29 against the Carolina Panthers, so they've slightly altered plans for practice this week.
That couldn't have come at a worse time for Jacobs, but this is a guy who's been an NFL running back since 2019.
Jacobs has been training and was patiently awaiting his return, but Green Bay knows they can't overdo it, even with all of the running back struggles they've had this season.
There's no world where Jacobs should get his usual usage of 20+ carries. Instead, they need to put him on a snap count and make sure they ease him back into action.
Remember, Savion Williams just came off the IR, and LaFleur dialed up a few snaps to him immediately against the Cowboys to get him back up to speed.
That should be the same for Jacobs, but as it gets deeper into the game, they'll have to carefully monitor how he's doing as there's no point in risking anything with Pierre Strong looking as good as he did in Week 6.
