With Josh Jacobs struggling and the ground game stalling, Green Bay must target the veteran playmaker to salvage their postseason hopes before the trade deadline passes.
There aren't many teams in the league that wouldn't be interested in Saquon Barkley, but the Green Bay Packers desperately need a solution at running back.
One could argue that Josh Jacobs just needs to get a bit of the rust off, but with everything going on off the field, his head clearly isn't in it and most Packers fans would much rather have him off this team entirely.
Without Jacobs, that leaves this team right back where they started. The trio of MarShawn Lloyd, Chris Brooks, and Kaleb Johnson is not going to cut it.
The NFC North is the toughest division in football, by far, and if the Packers want to be the only team in the division not to make the playoffs, they'll sit back and do nothing at the trade deadline.
Rumors have been swirling around the status of Jonathan Taylor, and while that would be a match made in heaven, it simply feels like the Wisconsin Badgers legend is going to be too expensive.
Trading for Barkley isn't going to be much easier, but Milwaukee Journal Sentinel's Tom Silverstein touched on the relationship he has with Micah Parsons, so it's at least worth a shot.
Barkley would be under contract through 2028
The Philadelphia Eagles are paying Barkley next to nothing this season, and he's then owed $10.5 million in 2027 and $15 million in 2028.
Remember, the Packers gave Jacobs a four-year, $48 million deal, so that averages out at $12 million per year.
Barkley is older than both Jacobs and Taylor, no doubt, but he's a proven winner and is currently stuck on an Eagles team that seems to be going nowhere.
In no world should Barkley's talents be wasted on a 2-6 team that no longer has its starting quarterback, so if there was ever a time for the Eagles to make a move, it's now.
This is a guy that will be turning 30 years old just before the Super Bowl, and he's had some injury concerns in the past.
Regardless, a trade is going to cost a heck of a lot less than it would for Taylor, and Silverstein noted that Barkley expressed interest in becoming a Packer before he signed with the Eagles in 2024.
This is a guy that's played 16 games each of the last two years, and he's averaging 4.9 yards per attempt this season. Keep in mind, the Packers average as a team is 2.9 yards per carry.
