The Carolina Panthers are adding a quarterback to the roster just a few weeks after the retirement of Will Grier.
The Carolina Panthers are in week two of training camp, opening up a little earlier due to the extra preseason game. It's been a rocky start for Dave Canales' team, and it's not because of the play.
Instead, the injury struggles have mounted. The Panthers have lost a handful of players to injuries in practice with a wide receiver being the latest on Wednesday. They also lost a player due to retirement.
Ahead of training camp, the Panthers were shocked by the retirement of quarterback Will Grier. Up until now, it wasn't expected that they would replace him and instead keep three quarterbacks on the roster. But that changed.
Per multiple reports, the Panthers signed free agent quarterback Kyle Trask on Wednesday.
It was just last week when general manager Dan Morgan stated that there were "no plans" to bring in a quarterback.
"No plans right now to bring a fourth guy on," Morgan replied. "Obviously, wish Will and his family the best. In terms of his career, just playing as long as he did, and just wish him the best moving forward."
Things have now changed as Trask joins a quarterback room led by Bryce Young and includes backups Kenny Pickett and Haynes King. The Panthers will likely keep three quarterbacks this season so Trask will get his shot at winning the backup job to Young.
After a successful career with the Florida Gators, he was a second-round pick of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. He made his debut in Week 18 of the 2022 season, facing off against the Atlanta Falcons, and completed 3 of 9 attempts for 23 yards.
In his four year career, Trask has just 28 total passing yards.
For Carolina, it's important to have their backups figured out through training camp at the quarterback position. It allows them to split the reps as needed knowing that Young is the top guy. For Picket, King and Trask, the battle to win the backup job just got a little bit more interesting especially with more playing time available due to the extra preseason game the team will have.
