The Carolina Panthers are reportedly receiving trade calls for a top defensive lineman per a report.
The Carolina Panthers enter Week 9 at 3-4 and on top of the NFC South but have lost two-straight games. After coming out of the bye week with a win over Philadelphia, Carolina has dropped games to Tampa Bay and Green Bay.
At 3-4, typically teams would think about trading away some pieces. But for Carolina, the NFC South is so weak that they could even be buyers ahead of next week's trade deadline.
However, that hasn't stopped teams from contacting the Panthers and attempting to trade for some key players. One of those players is defensive tackle Derrick Brown.
Joe Person of The Athletic wrote on Brown and in the article, he dropped an interesting note that the Panthers have received phone calls about the status of the standout defensive tackle, attempting to trade for him. But Person notes that the Panthers have shown no interest in moving him at all.
That makes sense. Brown is a really good defensive tackle that is a key piece to the Panthers' defense. As mentioned above, the Panthers are in a division that is very winnable which would get them to the playoffs. That's the path. They likely wont get a Wild Card spot in what is a very good NFC. One of the keys to winning the division will be Carolina's defense and Brown is at the center of that.
Brown is in his seventh season and is a few years removed from making a Pro Bowl back in 2023. This year, he has 21 tackles, three quarterback hits, five passes defensed, and one tackle for loss.
Carolina's schedule gets tougher and they still have four games against the NFC South still remaining. They are going to need some stout play all around. It's also refreshing to see that the Panthers aren't just going to trade away talented players as they have in the past.
Person mentions in his piece that Brown is here to win, and he wants to stay here and win games. So could that make the Panthers a team that is buying? The Panthers need some help in terms of their secondary, with both Jaycee Horn and Mike Jackson. Both could be returning but even if they do, the depth could be tested again.
There's also a need for more edge help after injuries have decimated that defense. The problem is, there may not be any viable options out there.
