A key update to potential Bryce Young contract talks has been reported ahead of Week 9.
Quarterbacks Bryce Young and CJ Stroud will be tied together for years after being the first two picks of the 2023 NFL Draft. Both quarterbacks are now in a pivotal fourth season and neither has a long-term deal yet.
Both had the fifth-year options picked up earlier in the offseason and both are playing well enough to have that conversation opened up. It was reported that Stroud turned down a contract extension already from Houston and is seeking a bigger deal moving forward.
But Young? It's been quiet on that front with the Carolina Panthers. Until now.
On Wednesday, Pro Football Talk's Mike Florio wrote about the Young situation and reported that the Panthers and the quarterback are “far down the road” toward signing him to a second deal. The deal is reportedly going to be worth $50 million per year, which has been consistent with reports earlier in the offseason. With Young under contract through 2027, his guaranteed salary next season will be $25.904 million. He could also be franchised for 2028 if a new deal isn't agreed to by then.
The thing about quarterback deals is that they will continue to go up and up as time goes on, the longer you wait. But is Young worth that?
Carolina is in a weird spot where Young and the offense has shown a lot this season. At one point early on, many believed they were a top ten offense and Young was playing at a MVP level. But that has since tamed down and the quarterback has struggled in the team's two-game losing streak.
Finding a quarterback is the hardest thing to do in the NFL and if you think you have your guy, you'd be smart to pay him while you can.
There's also been no signs that Carolina doesn't believe in Young. The report also states that the Panthers are eager to get something done with the quarterback to keep him around for the long term. Trying to find a new quarterback likely isn't worth it for the franchise at the moment.
But they also need Young to go out and win some games in what is another down year in the NFC South and a division that they have a chance at winning, again.
Young and the Panthers will look to get back on track this weekend but it will be another tough test. They will host the Denver Broncos in Charlotte, a team that has arguably a top defense in the NFL.
