The Carolina Panthers could use more depth on the defensive side of the ball.
The Carolina Panthers are coming off a bye week, giving the team some extra time to rest and recover from the first few weeks of the NFL season.
Carolina holds a record of 2-2 on the year, with the team coming off a big win over the Detroit Lions in Week 4. The Panthers have seen an explosive offensive attack take place this season, with the passing game being one of the best in the NFL.
Led by quarterback Bryce Young, the Panthers currently have the No. 2 passing attack in the NFL, which has helped this group stay competitive. The Carolina offense has been fun to watch take place, and the team will continue building on it the rest of the year.
But on the flip side, the defense still is a work in progress for the Panthers. Despite Carolina investing a lot of money into the defense over the offseason, the results have not panned out just yet.
If this were to continue for the Panthers, it could force the front office to look into ways to improve team. And with the trade deadline approaching, Carolina could try to bring in some extra talent for the defense.
One name that could be interesting is veteran cornerback Donte Jackson of the Los Angeles Chargers. With the Chargers starting the year 0-5, a fire sale could be taking place at some point.
Bleacher Report's NFL analyst Kristopher Knox linked the two sides together, naming Carolina as a possible landing spot for the cornerback. The Panthers could use more depth in the secondary, and Jackson has been mentioned as a trade candidate this year.
Jackson has dealt with some health issues of late, but when he's on the field, he can make a difference. The former second-round draft pick could be a big get for a team like the Panthers, giving the team more help in the secondary.
The veteran started 15 games a year ago for the Chargers, allowing a passer rating of only 56.8 in coverage. This is exactly the type of player that the Panthers need to go after if they are going to make a move at the deadline.
Carolina wants to get back to the playoffs this season, and someone like Jackson could be a low-risk addition, but a high-reward to the remainder of the season. This Panthers team owes it to themselves to add, especially with how well the offense has been playing to open the year.
