The Jets may be coming into this game 2-3, but they're not to be slept on, especially when it comes to their pass rush, and the Patriots are going to need some depth players to step up on Sunday to stop it.
The New York Jets may have a 2-3 record as they head to Foxborough this weekend to face the New England Patriots, but that record doesn't necessarily write them off against Drake Maye and company.
The Jets have a strong defensive front, especially in the pass rush. The Patriots have a banged-up offensive line that will need to make key adjustments before taking the field in Week 6.
The Patriots' offense is coming off its best performance of the season, a 45-17 win over the Las Vegas Raiders last week. Drake Maye will look to keep his foot on the gas against a division rival, but the Jets, led by head coach Aaron Glenn, get real creative with their blitz packages, and it could throw a lot of depth players on the offensive line for a loop.
David Bailey vs Caleb Lomu
As it stands, Patriots rookie OL Caleb Lomu will take over left tackle for Will Campbell on Sunday as he recovers from a knee injury. This now sets up a matchup between Lomu and fellow rookie edge rusher David Bailey.
Bailey, who was the number 2 overall pick in the 2026 draft, leads the Jets' pass rush with 5 sacks and 25 total tackles through five games. The two faced off a few times in college, as they both attended Big 12 schools (Utah and Texas Tech).
Lomu did well in those one-on-one matchups, but expect the Patriots to give the rookie some chip help by lining a tight end on his hip to help with edge rushes.
A war in the trenches
Jets versus Patriots is a rivalry often defined by key position players having great games. Quarterbacks, running backs, wide receivers, and tight ends will always be highlighted in this divisional matchup. However, this game may be defined in the trenches of the interior offensive and defensive lines.
Players like Jared Wilson will have their hands full against rookie nose tackle T'Vondre Sweat, alongside veteran Harrison Phillips, who led all NFL defensive linemen in run stops last season.
The Patriots will continue to use Walter Rouse if Ben Brown can't play on Sunday. They could also use Matt Pryor, if needed, as an alternating right guard. These players will be key if the Patriots can succeed on the ground, an area where they have struggled until last week.
