Is there a contract resolution with cornerback Christian Gonzalez?
New England Patriots beat reporter Mike Reiss of ESPN believes Christian Gonzalez's extension is the biggest storyline for the Pats in 2026.
The 2026 campaign is the final year before an $18.1 million club option for 2027 on Gonzalez's contract. Negotiations between the Patriots and Gonzalez's agent, Reggie Johnson, have yet to produce a deal.
"Is there a contract resolution with cornerback Christian Gonzalez? Eligible for an extension for the first time in his career, the 2025 Pro Bowler wasn't present for the majority of the voluntary offseason program and participated in only the walk-through/low-tempo portions of mandatory minicamp," Reiss wrote. "Asked June 9 if he would play this season without a new contract, he said, 'We got a long time to the season.' That timeline has been condensed. The Patriots ideally don't want the situation to linger into training camp, but is there a compromise to be reached?"
Gonzalez played one of the best games of his three-year NFL career in the Patriots' 29-13 loss to the Seattle Seahawks in Super Bowl LX. He was credited with three passes defended while totaling four tackles.
Selected with the No. 17 pick in the 2023 draft, Gonzalez was named to the Associated Press All-Pro second team in 2024. Last season, Gonzalez was voted to the Pro Bowl after putting up 10 passes defended, 54 solo tackles and one tackle for loss.
Gonzalez has thus far deflected questions when asked whether he would play this season on his current contract, which calls for him to earn a base salary of $2.259 million.
"I hope we get something done," Gonzalez said. "I've said this multiple times -- I've been drafted here; I want to be rewarded as a Patriot. I love this city. So of course I want to be here."
New England acquired A.J. Brown from the Philadelphia Eagles. Now, they should take care of Gonzalez to avoid making the star angry.
"We have a long time to the season. We're still pretty early in the offseason," Gonzalez said. "I'm focused on being here for the team, fulfill my role and what I'm here for this week, and focus on that."
New England opens the 2026 season with a Super Bowl rematch against Seattle. Let's see if a deal gets done.
In Year 2 of the Mike Vrabel era, the Patriots face the Seahawks, Pittsburgh Steelers, Jacksonville Jaguars, Buffalo Bills, Las Vegas Raiders, New York Jets, Chicago Bears, Miami Dolphins, Green Bay Packers, Detroit Lions, Los Angeles Chargers, Minnesota Vikings, Kansas City Chiefs and Denver Broncos.
To make another Super Bowl run, the Patriots need a happy and focused Gonzalez and that can only happen if an extension is reached.
