After overcoming a turbulent start to his New England Patriots’ tenure, Gabe Jacas has been one of the best rookie pass rushers in the NFL this season.

The beginning of Gabe Jacas’ tenure in Foxboro was anything but smooth.

Expectations were high when the New England Patriots traded up to No. 55 overall to select the rookie edge rusher in the second round of the 2026 NFL Draft, but those expectations were just as quickly tempered as Jacas’ absence from the team extended through rookie minicamp, organized team activities (OTAs), and into the start of training camp. The final rookie from this year’s draft class to ink a deal, the two sides worked through an extensive contract dispute centered around an offseason procedure that seemingly threatened his availability in the early portion of the fall.

Jacas began training camp on the Physically Unable to Perform (PUP) list, and when he finally suited up for New England, the results were underwhelming through the preseason. His over-aggressive tendencies were targeted by opponents’ weekly offensive game plans, and he was regularly shut out of contests by second- and third-string offensive tackles. His projected role along the defensive front was limited, but forced by necessity due to injuries higher on the edge-rushing depth chart to start the year.

Then, the regular season began — and Jacas turned up the heat.

His first career sack came in the season opener at the Seattle Seahawks, his first career interception followed one week later against the Pittsburgh Steelers, and by Week 4, Jacas was the best player at the position for the Patriots in their win over the Buffalo Bills.

Creating a highlight that circulated around the national media circuit, Jacas bull-rushed straight through five-time Pro Bowl left tackle Dion Dawkins in the second quarter to land a hit on Josh Allen that nearly resulted in a safety. A power rusher by trade, Jacas’ collegiate strengths were found within a violent play demeanor that allowed him to overwhelm blockers and create disruption — traits that are starting to reveal themselves with more regularity at the professional level and were on full display on that particular third-quarter snap.

The analytics from Jacas’ performance in Orchard Park paint a similar picture. He registered three pressures on 14 pass-rushing snaps and team-high marks in pass-rush win rate (28.6%, fourth among all NFL edge defenders in Week 4) and pass-rush grade (89.1, third). His 84.4 defensive grade, per PFF, was the second-highest grade among rookies last week, and his 69.3 grade for the season tops all rookie edge defenders league-wide.

When compared to other rookie edge rushers from the 2026 draft class, Jacas also ranks favorably — even with a limited snap share. He’s currently tied for second in pressures (10), quarterback hits (two), and sacks (2.0), third in pass-rush grade (68.9), and fourth in quarterback hurries (4).

Jacas’ performance over the first four games of the regular season has silenced critics — not only of himself as a player, but those who questioned the viability of New England’s edge-defender group. Still growing into a more significant role within Mike Vrabel’s defense, Jacas’ early development signals even greater growth still lies ahead. With injury concerns still circling around others in the room, he’ll have the opportunity to continue along that trajectory — and has shown signs of having the skill set to make a major impact in the pass rush for years to come.

His tenure may have gotten off to a rocky start — but as with all good things, it has been worth the wait. The Patriots were hopeful that Jacas would be a day-one contributor on draft night, and through the first month of the season, he’s been just that. Just four games into his rookie season, a player who was once praised as the embodiment of the Vrabel defensive identity is already showing up on a weekly basis — and that will only continue to manifest itself more consistently as he gains more experience.

The future is bright for Gabe Jacas in Foxboro.
