After bypassing extra NCAA eligibility amid a gambling scandal, the playmaker heads to the supplemental draft. Arizona, New York, and Pittsburgh could gamble on his upside.

What may end up being one of college football's biggest losses, both from an on- and off-field perspective, could be an NFL team's biggest opportunity to land a young and promising developmental quarterback.

While the NCAA is now left reeling after a concerning precedent was set around the quarterback's illegal gambling scandal, which ended in a temporary injunction and eligibility for another year, the NFL could see Texas Tech Red Raiders signal caller Brendan Sorsby join its ranks in the coming weeks.

Sorsby, despite being granted the temporary injunction to return to school for another year of play by a Lubbock CountyDistrict Court judge, is instead declaring for the NFL's supplemental draft.

For more on the decision and what led to this new development, Red Raider Roundtable writer Nick Teague has the latest:

The league has a number of teams that may be willing to roll the dice on Sorsby to see if they can land a developmental gunslinger that could become an eventual starter in their system. The quarterback made waves as a playmaker with the Cincinnati Bearcats and some teams are still looking for their future at the position.

One team in particular appears to be in dire straits.

Arizona Cardinals

The Cardinals, who have been engaged in a public contract dispute with veteran passer Jacoby Brissett already drafted former Miami Hurricanes quarterback Carson Beck, but many would have expected Sorsby to be ranked higher. If Arizona wants to pit two young signal callers in a competition to unseat the uncertainty around Brissett, Sorsby would be a strong option.

New York Jets

While head coach Aaron Glenn believes that quarterback Geno Smith can take the team "to the promised land," the team doesn't have a solid developmental option behind Smith when he inevitably doesn't. Smith has also been one fo the most sacked quarterbacks in each of the last two seasons, so having an intriguing backup option may be a good path to take for the franchise. A path that could lead them to bidding on Sorsby.

Pittsburgh Steelers

Behind quarterback Aaron Rodgers, who will return for his final season in 2026, the Steelers have two young passers in Will Howard and rookie Drew Allar. Adding Sorby to the mix would give the Steelers some fresh options with promise for their post-Rodgers days, which are fast approaching.

As a playoff team, the Steelers are the least likely of the three to land Sorsby if they are interested. The order of the supplemental draft is chosen in three groups, with playoff teams having the last priority and teams with six of fewer teams getting top priority.

Between the Jets and Cardinals, New York would have the slightest edge to land the better position as the team that draft No. 2 overall vs. Arizona's third overall selection.
