Former Dallas Cowboys quarterback and NFL coach Jason Garrett compared the 2026 Los Angeles Rams to his 90s team for this one reason.
Former Dallas Cowboys quarterback and NFL coach Jason Garrett compared the 2026 Los Angeles Rams to his 90s team.
In an appearance on the Rich Eisen show, Garrett was asked what challenges the head coach Sean McVay faces heading into the season with high expectations.
The 60-year-old player-turned-coach-turned-analyst compared this year's Rams to the 1990s Cowboys he was part of because of the noise and expectations placed on them.
"I think Sean's challenge is probably similar to challenges that we had in the 90s," Garrett said.
"With the Cowboys' Super Bowl team, there's a lot of noise around the team, and typically, when people talk about noise, it's negative. That positive noise is a challenge as well. And when you've won a Super Bowl or won a couple of them, there's all of that stuff that you have to contend with."
Garrett went on to say that he has loved what McVay has built in Los Angeles since taking over in 2017.
"I would go back to just the program that Sean has built out there.
"Obviously, a fantastic coach and a fantastic leader. And I think he understands, and has his team understand, the importance of what Nick Saban would call 'process.'
"Get the right people together, do things the right way each and every day, and focus on that, and the results will come. I think lock in on that, double down on that."
Garrett served as the primary backup to Troy Aikman during the Cowboys 1990s run.
The 1990s Cowboys established themselves as a dynasty, winning three Super Bowls in a four-season span, and were one of the most dominant teams in NFL history.
The Rams have a long way to go in that aspect, but they have all the tools they need to replicate that success. Los Angeles is loaded with talent, starting with the head coach-quarterback duo of McVay and Matthew Stafford.
Stafford leads the charge on offense with a potent and dynamic attack throughout the field, with players like Puka Nacua, Davante Adams, Kyren Williams, Blake Corum, Colby Parkinson, and Tyler Higbee.
On the defensive side, they boast an elite pass rush led by Myles Garrett and a new and improved secondary led by All-Pro cornerback Trent McDuffie.
Expectations are sky-high for the Rams, as they have assembled one of the most complete rosters on paper.
McVay and the Rams will be challenged like never before in a variety of ways. However, the 40-year-old has proven to be a leader who has reshaped the organization in a significant way, and the expectation is that he will continue doing so despite the massive expectations heading into the 2026 season.
