The Los Angeles Rams have added a player to their secondary while placing running back Ronnie Rivers on IR.
The Los Angeles Rams have placed running back Ronnie Rivers on IR (injured reserve), after he suffered a calf injury during the team's Week 2 victory against the New York Giants.
Rivers' calf injury is clearly serious enough that he will miss the next four games. To make up for the loss of the running back, the Rams also signed safety Maximus Pulley to the active roster.
Pulley most recently was on the practice squad of the Philadelphia Eagles, where he signed as an undrafted free agent out of Wofford. Though he did not make the Eagles' 53-man roster, he was signed to the practice squad the next day.
Pulley secured seven interceptions and 189 total tackles in three seasons with Wofford.
The Rams may have signed Pulley as some depth due to the injury to Kamren Kinchens. Kinchens suffered a hamstring injury during Week 1, and the ailment continued to impact him in Week 2.
Kinchens was ruled out due to a hamstring injury, and the move to bring in Pulley may point to the veteran safety potentially missing out on Week 3 as well. The injury report that comes out on Wednesday will offer more details.
If Kinchens does not suit up, the Rams would have Quentin Lake, Kam Curl, Jaylen McCollough, and Josh Wallace as their only healthy defensive backs.
With Rivers out, the Rams might choose to elevate Dean Connors or Jordan Waters to the active roster for their Week 3 matchup against the Denver Broncos. Both Connors and Waters impressed during preseason and may now get a chance to show what they can do.
Los Angeles has a strong run game with Kyren Williams and Blake Corum being utilized as a tandem, but both might also need a breather at times. This could lead to Connors or Waters being able to get some snaps.
Should the Rams also be ahead, they would bench both Williams and Corum and put out their third-string option.
Similar to the depth at safety, the Rams may not need to elevate either Connors or Waters, due to Williams and Corum often working so well with one another on the ground. Still, it is always a good move to ensure depth is there should any injuries occur.
During Week 2, Williams and Corum combined for 163 yards on the ground. Williams was also utilized in the passing game, as he picked up 12 yards and one touchdown through the air.
