Los Angeles Rams running back and special teams ace Ronnie Rivers is returning to the team on a one-year deal.
The Los Angeles Rams are bringing back another one of their own, as running back Ronnie Rivers is returning on a one-year deal.
Rivers appeared in 11 games in 2025, mostly taking advantage of special teams opportunities. He secured 418 yards on 16 returns for an average of 26.1 yards per return.
Rivers also appeared as the third back in the rotation with Kyren Williams and Blake Corum. In limited carries, he secured 46 yards on nine rushing attempts.
It makes perfect sense why the Rams would bring back Rivers, simply due to his prowess in the return game. Having 26.1 yards per return is nothing to scoff at.
Also, the Rams did use Xavier Smith as a returner as well, and his muffed punt during the NFC Championship may be a big reason why Los Angeles wants to have some added insurance in the return game.
That is not to say that Smith will be judged on that one play and will not get the same opportunities in 2026, but there is always a reason to have a rotation of returners. The Rams continue to cover their bases on the roster, and bringing back Rivers is part of that due diligence.
Rivers initially signed with the Rams in 2022 after practice squad stints with the Seattle Seahawks and Arizona Cardinals. The running back would remain in the NFC West, making more of an impact with Los Angeles after going undrafted out of Fresno State.
Rivers was activated to the roster in November 2022, appearing in eight games and getting one start. He would secure 50 yards from scrimmage, including nine rushes for 21 yards and five receptions for 29 yards.
Rivers had a similar 2023 season, appearing in nine games and starting one. He would bring in 151 yards from scrimmage.
It wasn't until the 2023 season that the Rams used Rivers in the return game, but he only had one return for 16 yards. The 2025 season is where he began to flourish, securing those 418 yards on 16 returns.
The Rams' special teams were a bit of a pain point in 2025, and the team fired Chase Blackburn before the season ended. With former Cleveland Browns special teams coach Bubba Vetrone taking over, he may have seen a lot more to work with regarding Rivers.
Either way, the Rams are ensuring they have all they need to kick off their return game in 2026.
