Former Los Angeles Rams cornerback Ahkello Witherspoon is signing with the Washington Commanders.
The Los Angeles Rams have now lost their third free agent cornerback, as longtime veteran Ahkello Witherpoon is signing with the Washington Commanders.
Witherspoon has spent the three seasons with the Rams, appearing in 36 games and starting 24. His 2025 season was cut short after suffering a broken scapula, which re-broke during the playoffs.
During Witherspoon's stretch with the Rams, he brought in five interceptions, 25 passes defended, and 91 total tackles.
His best season came during 2023, when he played in and started all 17 games, securing three interceptions and 52 total tackles.
Witherspoon was initially drafted by the San Francisco 49ers in the 2017 NFL Draft out of Colorado. He would play four seasons there, eventually landing with the Seattle Seahawks in 2021, but was eventually traded to the Pittsburgh Steelers.
Following his two seasons with Pittsburgh, Witherspoon landed with the Rams in 2022, where he remained.
Rams Secondary in Flux
The Rams needed to overhaul their secondary in a big way, and they did just that by bringing in former Kansas City Chiefs All-Pro Trent McDuffie and fellow Super Bowl champion Jaylen Watson.
Los Angeles also brought back safety Kam Curl, who emerged as one of the best secondary defenders in the NFL.
With the secondary in place, the Rams continued to allow their presumed depth cornerbacks to leave in free agency. Cobie Durant joined the Dallas Cowboys, as did Derion Kendrick. Now, Witherspoon is the latest to exit for another NFC squad.
While the Rams do have a rebuilt secondary, their depth pieces are a big concern at this juncture. Losing three corners in a matter of weeks might be something that causes concern, unless general manager Les Snead is set to hit on multiple secondary players in the draft.
The Rams have talent across the board, but depth could become a concern with the loss of Durant, Kendrick, and now Witherspoon. Los Angeles does have the No. 13 overall pick, and could use that to select a cornerback, such as LSU's Mansoor Delane, if he falls to that place.
The Rams still have a solid roster from top to bottom, even with the exit of Witherspoon.
