Los Angeles Rams superstar cornerback Trent McDuffie's versatility will be the team's biggest difference maker in their quest for a Super Bowl title.
The goal for the Los Angeles Rams in 2026 is clear: hoist the Lombardi Trophy.
The Rams have made it clear that they are all-in on this season, and the biggest move they have made so far to indicate that is trading for All-Pro Trent McDuffie.
Adding the 25-year-old, lockdown corner was a move Los Angeles needed to make after the secondary gave up big numbers in passing yards per game, with 276.
The cornerback position was a necessity for the Rams this offseason, and they addressed it in a big way. The addition of McDuffie is expected to elevate the unit.
McDuffie is an elite corner with exceptional coverage skills and a knack for making plays. However, what truly sets him apart is his versatility, as he has the ability to line up in multiple spots across the secondary and impact the game in a variety of ways.
He is expected to do just that with the Rams, and is more than happy to do that. In his introductory press conference, McDuffie spoke on his versatility and said he will do whatever it takes to lead Los Angeles to the big game.
"It don’t matter where you put me," McDuffie said. "I’ll play safety. I’ll put my hand in the dirt. Like, I hope I don’t have to. But, really, I’m just out here wanting to play ball, you know. And no matter where you put me, I’m going to work, day in and day out, to make sure that I do my job at a very high level, and that’s the guy you’re getting."
McDuffie has proven that he can play anywhere on the football field. He has significant experience at both corner (over 2,000 snaps) and in the slot (over 800 snaps). He ranks in the top 10 for slot yards per snap allowed since 2022, proving his elite ability to switch positions.
The former Washington Huskie can also be a huge help in blitzing and run support for Los Angeles. McDuffie was ranked 11th in run defense on PFF and has been one of the better run defenders for multiple seasons, even as a cornerback.
Rams defensive coordinator Chris Shula will be able to do a lot of things with McDuffie, as he will be a nightmare for opposing offenses.
McDuffie proved to be an impact player with the Kansas City Chiefs, and he will look to do the same with the Rams. Considering his versatility, Los Angeles may be able to throw out many more defensive schemes moving forward.
