The five position groups that could make the biggest difference for the Los Angeles Rams on the path to a Super Bowl run.
The 2026 season will be a very important year for the Los Angeles Rams, as they currently have a roster that has the capability to win a Super Bowl.
However, in order to win the Super Bowl, the Rams will need the entire roster to play to its potential and lean on the position groups with proven experience and reliable depth.
So, heading into training camp, let's take a look at the five Rams' position groups with the most upside and potential for major impact in the 2026 season.
1. Defensive End/Edge Rusher
One of the position groups with the most upside is no doubt the defensive end position, which has a blend of youth, experience, and big-play ability.
At defensive end, the Rams have the newly acquired star in Myles Garrett, Byron Young, Josiah Stewart, Desjuan Johnson, and Keir Thomas II. The Rams also have players like Braden Fiske and Larrell Murchison who have the size and positional flexibility to play on the edge or at defensive tackle.
With Garrett now on the roster, the defensive end group as a whole has an incredible opportunity to be much more effective because Garrett's presence alone will require opposing offenses to send double teams his way, which creates one-on-ones across the board.
If the defensive end unit plays to its potential, this could be one of the most disruptive units in the entire league.
2. Running Back
In the backfield, the Rams have one of the better running back tandems in the NFL with Kyren Williams and Blake Corum.
Last season, Williams and Corum began to split the carries a bit more, which helped Williams to stay healthier later in the season and allowed Corum to gain more experience to become an even bigger part of this offense.
Sean McVay's offensive system uses a variety of runs, and with the duo of Williams and Corum, McVay could potentially expand the playbook a little bit more to give defenses even more to prepare for. Both Williams and Corum are strong backs and have solid vision to make cuts, which makes the Rams' zone run game quite effective.
During the 2026 season, if the backfield workload truly does become 50-50, this running attack has an opportunity to be the most dynamic in the NFL.
3. Cornerback
Shifting back to the defensive side of the ball, the cornerback position is another unit that seems to have a lot of upside heading into next season.
This offseason, the Rams added two very reliable cornerbacks in Trent McDuffie and Jaylen Watson, who have an opportunity to help this Rams secondary take a key step forward. The Rams also have a few younger corners returning from 2025, including Emmanuel Forbes Jr., Cam Lampkin, Drey Norwood, Al'zillion Hamilton, and Nyzier Fourqurean.
At this point, McDuffie, Watson, and Forbes project to be in the starting rotation which should be a much better starting unit than the Rams had a season ago. Behind them, if Lampkin, Norwood, Hamilton, and Fourqurean can provide solid depth at corner and on special teams this is a unit that has the potential to be one of the best and most impactful on the roster.
4. Wide Receiver
On the perimeter, there is no question that wide receivers Puka Nacua and Davante Adams form one of the best duos in the league, which gives this Rams' offense and quarterback Matthew Stafford the chance to have yet another productive season.
The one thing this group does not have is a clear option at WR3; the Rams do have plenty of options who will compete during training camp for the third wide receiver spot. The top candidates for wide receiver three are Xavier Smith, Jordan Whittington, Konata Mumpfield, and rookie CJ Daniels.
In McVay's offense, having a third wide receiver who takes advantage of the opportunities that Nacua and Adams create is something that could elevate this offense to an even higher level.
At the conclusion of training camp, assuming the Rams have a clear wide receiver three, the wide receiver core could become too much for opposing secondaries to handle and give Stafford another chance to bring home an MVP and lead the Rams on a deep playoff run once again.
5. Tight End
Lastly, it is time to talk about the tight end position, which has the argument to be one of the deepest and most diverse position groups on the entire roster.
Heading into 2026, the Rams' tight end group has a variety of skill sets, including Colby Parkinson, Terrance Ferguson, Tyler Higbee, Davis Allen, and rookie Max Klare. Last season, McVay used a significant amount of 13 personnel, which puts three tight ends on the field, and because of the Rams' tight end room, many defenses were left wondering how to match up.
Each of the Rams tight ends have the ability to contribute as receivers with solid production, and in addition to that they have the size to be reliable blockers in the run game which constantly puts defenses in tough spots.
Heading into 2026, if McVay chooses to continue deploying 13 personnel, this tight end group has the potential to have an incredible year and with continued development this may be the deepest room in the entire league.
