The Baltimore Ravens were hit with a harsh grade for the price they paid to bring in center Cam Jurgens.
The Baltimore Ravens needed to make a move to repair their offensive line, as they lost three starters in the span of a couple of weeks. Centers Jovaughn Gwyn and Ethan Pocic went down, followed by right guard Andrew Vorhees.
This led to the Ravens' front office pulling off a blockbuster trade to acquire center Cam Jurgens from the Philadelphia Eagles for a 2027 fifth-round pick and a 2028 second-round pick in exchange for Jurgens and a 2027 seventh-round pick.
Due to the draft capital given up in the deal, ESPN's Seth Walder hit the Ravens with a harsh grade.
This deal had to get done for multiple reasons.
Gywn had been filling in as the team's starting center after playing mostly guard in his career. He won the job by default as Baltimore lost its first of three centers during joint practice.
Danny Pinter suffered a season-ending patellar tendon tear. Gwyn won the job by default, as Pocic was also recovering from a season-ending Achilles tear.
Ravens head coach Jesse Minter also stated that Gwyn was not the expected long-term starter. There may have already been a plan to put Pocic in once he was fully ready.
The issue is that both went down, leading to rookie right guard Vega Ioane stepping in to save the day in Week 3. Now, without Vorhees, the Ravens would be depending on Emory Jones Jr.
With too much uncertainty on the line, they made the move to bring in Jurgens. The issue that Walder sees is the draft capital paid due to the panic of needing a full-on center.
"I understand that the Ravens rightfully believe they are Super Bowl contenders, probably want Ioane to stay and develop at guard and thought they needed to fill their gap at center. Making a trade before the deadline to fix that issue makes sense. But almost certainly there would have been cheaper options out there than this. And the timing is odd, considering that Jurgens is currently in concussion protocol and not expected to play Sunday.
"So it seems like the Eagles sensed Baltimore's desperation and squeezed an overpay out of the Ravens," Walder said.
Walder is right to a degree. The Ravens did need to find an option that was a true center, and Jurgens is that.
What many fail to understand is that the Eagles have had Jurgens playing left guard, which is not his usual spot. The linemen in the guard position have not played well, leading to the potential thought that he is slipping in his coverage.
Jurgens is a true center and was awarded a Pro Bowl nod in 2024 and 2025. During the 2024 season, he gave up no sacks.
Baltimore also has a new offensive line coach in Dwayne Ledford, who could also help Jurgens to settle in on the Ravens line in a significant way.
Minter stated that Jurgens will likely be ready to go next week, as he is currently in concussion protocol. Once he is ready and up to speed, this will allow the Ravens to kick Ioane back to the right guard position.
The line would then likely be left tackle Ronnie Stanley, left guard John Simpson, center Cam Jurgens, right guard Vega Ioane, and right tackle Roger Rosengarten.
Minter has stated they will always strive to have the best five on the line, and this combination could be just that.
