Baltimore Ravens rookie receiver Ja'Kobi Lane continues to impress, and head coach Jesse Minter has spoken about his consistency in his playmaking abilities.
Each week of practice, one of the players who continues to make noise is Baltimore Ravens rookie wide receiver Ja'Kobi Lane. One such moment was a sideline one-handed grab, which was highlighted by the team's X page.
With Lane continually making plays, his ability to show up has clearly drawn the eyes of coaches, including head coach Jesse Minter. Minter offered a bigger clue on what the rookie may be seeing in terms of his opportunities, as he has now seen far more "consistency."
"You're far enough in that there is consistency now. There is consistency in making really nice contested catches, being a really friendly target for the quarterback. He's learning a lot. The offense is completely different than what he was used to in college. He's in here, he's working hard ... love to see it every day making those kinds of plays," Minter said.
Minter's point on consistency matters a great deal here, as he is indicating that Lane's playmaking ability is not a fluke. That has been apparent and well-documented, including the highlight plays on social media.
Even more impressive is Lane's ability to pull off these plays when being covered by Marlon Humphrey and Nate Wiggins. Minter also spoke about how this benefits both sides, with the rookie honing his skills against two very good cornerbacks, and the corners also facing a unique talent like Lane.
"That's why you practice ... whether it's Nate or Marlon, they have really good coverage on him and he's making nice plays. He's getting a chance to season himself against two really good corners that play at a really high level ... love to see that and you certainly start to see what it can become when the season starts," Minter said.
Lane is clearly making the right kind of impact, and this could lead to a "major opportunity," which is what Minter said would occur back in minicamp. The Ravens head coach indicated that one of the rookies between Lane and Elijah Sarratt would get an opportunity, and that appears to be happening.
Zay Flowers is the main man in the wide receiver room, and Rashod Bateman is the clear WR2. That leaves the WR3 spot open, and Lane could be putting himself as the favorite to win that job.
Granted, nothing is guaranteed, and Baltimore will need to test the rookie more during preseason.
The Ravens are set to face the Philadelphia Eagles on Aug. 15 in their first of three preseason games. Lane will likely play in the game, and he will need to keep his consistency up.
Lane might also be playing against second- or third-stringers until the "dress rehearsal" third preseason game. If the receiver can continue this trend well into preseason, he may run away with the chance to suit up as a starter in 2026.
There is plenty more weeks for Minter and offensive coordinator Declan Doyle to evaluate Lane, but he has every chance to show that he is ready for a substantial role on the offense.
