Baltimore Ravens head coach Jesse Minter revealed that wide receiver Zay Flowers suffered a significant injury during training camp.
During the Baltimore Ravens' training camp practice on Saturday, wide receiver Zay Flowers suffered a significant injury when he collided with safety Jaylinn Hawkins. Flowers stayed on the ground for some time before he was able to get up and limped to the locker room.
The initial thought was that it may be serious, but Ravens head coach Jesse Minter indicated that it was a quad contusion and that Flowers will now be "day-to-day."
Minter also stated that he does not expect Flowers to miss much time. The receiver may miss some practice time, but nothing long-term.
Flowers just signed a four-year, $140 million extension on Tuesday, and to lose the receiver to a significant injury would be heartbreaking for the Baltimore offense. Despite the scary collision, Minter stated that the injury is not very serious.
With training camp rolling on, the Ravens are now preparing to take on the Philadelphia Eagles in their frist preseason game on Aug. 15. There is a good chance that Flowers would likely not play in the game, but he will now presumably spend the next few days resting to ensure he heals.
Contusions are not necessarily the worst injuries, but soft tissue injuries can often lead to significant time off due to where the injury actually occurs. With the contusion being on the thigh for Flowers, it could limit his ability to run or cut.
The good news is the Ravens pass catchers have been stepping up in a big way throughout training camp, with rookie receiver Ja'Kobi Lane drawing plenty of praise. His ability to make plays on the ball has been well-documented.
Rashod Bateman is also expected to take a leap under offensive coordinator Declan Doyle.
Flowers has been the lone playmaker in the room over the past two seasons, and now it appears that quarterback Lamar Jackson and the offense have far more to work with.
Despite the contusion, Flowers may have escaped this injury with a best-case scenario. The Ravens will certainly monitor him, but it sounds like he could be back to practice later this week as the team prepares for the Eagles.
Again, many veterans may not play in the first preseason game, so Flowers could get ample time to recover from the injury.
