Darnold has a turnover problem right now, and the first step to addressing the problem is admitting you have one, and Sam's done just that.
Right about now, Seattle Seahawks quarterback Sam Darnold might be feeling like that Super Bowl win was a million years ago.
After yet another loss, this time in Week 6 to the Denver Broncos at Empower Field by a low OT score of 17-14, it was Darnold who again tossed two interceptions.
One came with 1:25 left in the fourth quarter, and the other came in overtime, which handed Denver the win, after the offense punted on seven straight possessions to end the game in regulation time.
In his five games this season, Darnold has already thrown seven interceptions, and he's thrown multiple picks in three of those games.
That's a problem. ... and it's pushed some Seattle watchers into thinking reverting to backup Drew Lock - who subbed for Darnold in the first month of the year - might be the answer.
We get it.
Last season, Darnold totaled 14 in the regular season, so he's already halfway there.
But benching the Super Bowl QB?
In the post-game, the two-time Pro Bowl quarterback took responsibility for his turnovers, and head coach Mike Macdonald knows it all starts and stops with Sam.
"I'm glad he did," Macdonald said. "He's the leader of our offense, and if it's not where you want it to be, then it's the leader's job to take responsibility, saying, ' Hey, look, our football team's not where we want it to be right now. I'm responsible for what happens on the field for our team.
"We all take responsibility for our area of influence, and that's a great example of how we want to operate is let's own our part, and let's figure out a way to find a solution and move forward. But definitely, it starts on the player side. It definitely starts with Sam, and I'm glad he's the first one to say it."
With a 10-day break before they face the Kansas City Chiefs, the Seahawks and Darnold have to figure out why the turnovers are happening with such alarming regularity.
But perhaps what is the worst thing is that the turnovers are happening at crucial times and are costing Seattle games.
Now, quarterbacks are going to throw interceptions; it's just the nature of the job, but you can't have the back-breaking ones Sam has had this season; it just cripples your team.
So the 3-3 Seahawks will be hard at work over the next 10 days to figure out a solution to reel these pesky turnovers in.
Even though we are six weeks into the season, there are already rumblings of a quarterback change. That's where we are right now.
So yeah, Sam's taken responsibility for the turnovers, but now - amid the public's pondering of a benching - he's got to make sure he doesn't commit so many of them.
