In what was supposed to be off the record, Macdonald's words with Graham Bensigner got into the public eye, and the reaction has been huge.
It hasn't been the best 24 hours for Seattle Seahawks coach Mike Macdonald.
A video has gone viral as he was being interviewed by Graham Bengsinger, in which he revealed that Denver Broncos head coach Sean Payton wasn't happy that the Seahawks used videos posted on social media by fans of their practices to help game plan for their game.
Now, fans posting team practices is nothing new, and in the video with Bensinger, Macdonald stated that Payton and the Broncos were going to make a huge deal out of it publicly, similar to a Spy-Gate.
Of course, the Seahawks responded stating they would sue Denver if the franchise did it.
And the worst part was that Macdonald, in speaking to the media on that incident, was under the impression that he was shooting the breeze with Bensigner before the interview got rolling.
“It was something I didn’t intend to come out for public use,” Macdonald said. “Thought it was the most appropriate thing to reach out to Sean and really just apologize to him for having that be public when it wasn’t meant to. It’s a lesson learned. I got to be better in that moment for understanding I’m responsible for what I say no matter the circumstance.”
"It stings for me frankly."
Macdonald was then asked how Payton took his phone call, stating he was "great," so that is a positive.
And Payton has indeed said, "We're good.''
But Macdonald is taking this as a lesson that, going forward, he'll assume he's being recorded whenever he's talking.
So the matter has now been resolved, and the video was meant to be for public use, yet here we are.
After all of this, I'm not sure Macdonald will want to be interviewed by Bensigner for a long time...if ever.
