Silencing doubters with a Super Bowl ring and elite efficiency, Sam Darnold’s top-five analytical ranking confirms his transformation from draft bust to the NFL's premier postseason closer.
Seattle Seahawks quarterback Sam Darnold continues to create new narratives.
Once considered a bust who was destined to be relegated to backup roles for his entire career, Darnold changed the public's general opinion after hoisting the Vince Lombardi trophy, having delivered Seattle its second Super Bowl victory.
While achieving football's ultimate goal should be enough to erase the stigma surrounding the only signal caller from the 2018 NFL Draft class to bask in Super Bowl glory — there are still many detractors out there.
Some solely credit the defense, while others focus on Jaxon Smith-Njigba's impact on the offensive side of the ball.
Regardless of who you believe is responsible for the Seahawks' run to Super Bowl LX, Darnold's clutch play throughout his inaugural season in Seattle was undeniable.
And now we have an official statistic to prove it.
Relying on an array of advanced metrics, Pro Football Focus (PFF) has constructed a method of grading quarterbacks' clutch play.
The Darnold doubters will be sick to hear that the Seahawks franchise guy came in at No. 4 among all of his peers ... ahead of fellow 2018 draftee Josh Allen.
"The Seahawks quarterback posted just a 0.89% turnover-worthy play rate, generating seven big-time throws against just one turnover-worthy play across 103 clutch dropbacks," PFF's Mark Chichester wrote.
The numbers certainly matched the moments.
Darnold's 2025 clutch résumé included a game-winning drive against Arizona in Week 4, a stunning comeback over the Rams in Week 16 and a three-touchdown performance in the NFC Championship before finishing the season ... with a Super Bowl title.
"But his success wasn't simply about avoiding mistakes. Darnold ranked among the NFL's top five quarterbacks in several key efficiency metrics, including accurate throw rate (73.3%, third), negatively graded play rate (8.9%, fifth) and yards per attempt (8.4, fifth)," Chichester continued. "The combination of accuracy, efficiency and ball security helped produce one of the strongest clutch seasons of any quarterback in 2025."
So while the doubters will continue searching for ways to discredit Darnold, the 28-year-old now possesses two things that can't be debated:
The numbers from one of the most trusted analytical groups in professional sports say he's one of the four clutchest quarterbacks in the NFL, and the ring on his finger says he's a champion.
Whether critics choose to acknowledge it or not, Darnold has earned his place among the NFL's most accomplished quarterbacks entering 2026.
