NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell is pushing back against rumors of soft market interest, citing tremendous demand for the franchise as its potential record-breaking $11 billion valuation looms large.
For months, uncertainty has surrounded the future ownership of the Seattle Seahawks. Questions about buyer interest, franchise value and how quickly a sale could happen have fueled speculation across the league. Now, NFL commissioner Roger Goodell is pushing back on one of the biggest concerns.
Speaking recently about the Seahawks ownership process, Goodell rejected reports suggesting interest in purchasing the franchise has been weaker than expected. Instead, he described the situation in completely different terms.
"There have been some reports that I would say are not accurate with respect to the amount of interest," the NFL Commissioner said. "It’s exactly the opposite. It’s actually been tremendous interest in the team."
That statement matters because reports had emerged indicating the market for a Seahawks sale was "softer" than previous NFL franchise transactions, including sales involving the Washington Commanders. Goodell’s comments suggest the league does not view Seattle’s ownership future as a problem.
The Seahawks remain under the control of Jody Allen following the death of former owner Paul Allen in 2018. Under the terms tied to Allen’s estate, the expectation has long been that the franchise would eventually be sold, though the timing has remained uncertain. Earlier this year, Goodell acknowledged that a future sale was always part of the broader plan while praising Jody Allen’s stewardship of the organization.
What remains unclear is who the eventual buyer could be.
There were some rumored buyers that really made some headlines, and they were Apple CEO Tim Cook, and Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg. Those rumors were denied, but that does not mean that buyers are not interested in the reigning Super Bowl champions.
The financial side is staggering as well. Estimates have valued the Seahawks between roughly $9 billion and $11 billion, which would make a sale one of the most expensive in professional sports history and likely surpass previous NFL records.
For Seahawks fans, the immediate takeaway is simple: despite outside concern, the NFL is signaling confidence that Seattle’s ownership transition will attract serious interest whenever the process fully moves forward.
Until an official sale develops, Goodell’s comments may be the strongest indication yet that the league believes the Seahawks remain one of the NFL’s premier ownership opportunities.
