Seattle’s offensive coordinator faces his former team in a high-stakes divisional clash, attempting to crack a dominant defense while navigating familiar faces and Raheem Morris’s evolving schemes.
The Seattle Seahawks' Week 5 clash against the San Francisco 49ers will be an interesting game for offensive coordinator Brian Fleury.
Coming up against a team he has been a coach for in various roles from 2019 to 2025, now he's on the other side, coming up against Raheem Morris' defense.
The 49ers are 4-0 and have looked superb in the opening month of the season, while the Seahawks have been a little up-and-down.
But what better way to get yourself properly back on track than a win over a division rival?
For Fleury, having been with the 49ers for years, does he see some of the same things now from the defense compared to when he was there?
"Yeah, there's definitely some new things, I worked with Raheem [Morris] for a week before I came here, so didn't really get to see him implement his scheme," Fleury said. "But you can see some familiarity just with the players.
"Obviously, the linebackers have been there for a while. The DBs, and then a lot of the techniques up front are similar, but they're doing some different things just overall schematically. So, it's been fun to dive into that and treat it as a brand-new opponent."
So, it will be different, and Fleury won't exactly have any inside knowledge of what the 49ers will try to do defensively.
Still, this looms as a good test for the Seattle offense, as the 49ers defense is only allowing, on average, 16 points per game, third best in the NFL.
Plus, they've only allowed more than 300 total yards of offense just once, so this looms as a game where the Seahawks' offense is going to have its work cut out.
After the win over the Los Angeles Chargers, which was disjointed to say the least, Seattle now faces a true NFC power at home.
Yes, Fleury is on the other side of it now, but he won't have any intimate knowledge that he could use to his team's advantage.
Instead, it is a "brand new" defense he'll be going against on Sunday.
We know the Seahawks have yet to fully hit their stride this season, yet they sit at 3-1, with the loss by just two points, so expect another close, go-down-to-the-wire contest.
It's a division game; the 49ers are undefeated and on the road at Lumen Field, and when we add in the Fleury storyline, it has all the makings of a classic NFC West matchup.
