The Seahawks will roll with Lock as the starter against the Cardinals.
The Seattle Seahawks will have Drew Lock starting against the Arizona Cardinals in Week 2 as Sam Darnold deals with a glute injury.
Lock stepped in after just five plays against the New England Patriots and led Seattle to a 13-10 win, finishing his night going 16 of 22 for 187 yards and a touchdown as the Seahawks might just have one of the better backup quarterbacks in football.
Always seemingly ready at a moment's notice, whenever Lock's number has been called over the years in Seattle, he's answered the bell.
The Week 14 game in 2023, when he took down the Philadelphia Eagles 20-17, stands out: he went 22 of 33 for 208 yards and a touchdown.
But what is it about Lock that allows him to step in and play at a high level, even when he doesn't get consistent reps?
Head coach Mike Macdonald knows.
"Drew's a proven, really good player in this league," Macdonald said. "When he's started, he's played really good football. When he's been on our team, since I've seen him play in person, he's a heck of a player here.
"Heck of a guy. Heck of a teammate. He's got a great balance about him of being a true professional, but also, he's a loose and focused guy, he's a warrior in the garden, he's all the things that we want from our player at the quarterback position."
So, Lock will get some runway with Darnold's injury.
Macdonald said the Seahawks don't expect Darnold to go on IR (he'd need to miss at least four games if he did), so that is a plus.
There have been some reports that Darnold will miss between three and four weeks, so that is going to be a nice little sample size for Lock to dig his teeth into.
After the Cardinals in Week 2, Lock will face the Washington Commanders, the Los Angeles Chargers, and the San Francisco 49ers.
So that is a tough stretch, and if Lock can keep the ship afloat in those first couple of games, the hope is that Darnold might come in and keep this thing rolling.
There is clear confidence in Lock being the starter. Why? Because he's shown the Seahawks that, in a pinch, he can deliver.
