The Oklahoma Sooners are putting together an NFL-pedigree staff that now has a future Hall of Famer in the building.

The University of Oklahoma is bringing in an NFL icon to oversee their tight ends room. The Sooners have officially hired Dallas Cowboys legend Jason Witten to replace Joe Jon Finley as their tight ends coach. The future Hall of Famer lacks coaching experience at the college level but brings considerable star pedigree and experience to the program. He does, however, has experience as the head coach at Liberty Christian School in Argyle coaching his sons since 2021. He has a 44-7 record with two state championships.

Witten played for the University of Tennessee before being selected by the Cowboys in the third round of the 2003 NFL draft. The 17-year-pro is an 11-time Pro Bowler, a two-time First-Team All-Pro, and was recently named one of the 15 finalists for the 2026 Pro Football Hall of Fame class. Oklahoma hopes that he’ll bring the player development skills and fundamentals he instilled in high schoolers over to the SEC program.

Here is the full story from Sooners Roundtable writer Tyler Jones on the massive hire and what it signifies for the program’s football vision.

Oklahoma is looking to now assemble a staff with NFL pedigree to try to continue competing in the tough conference, and Witten’s hiring undoubtably will spark a fire on the recruiting trail for tight ends to want to come play under one of the NFL greats, one who is highly respected and revered in Dallas.

To get the pro perspective, here is the story from Cowboys Roundtable writer Mike Fisher on what Witten will bring to the table from his time with the franchise.
