Authorities postponed a high-profile soccer match amid civil unrest, though the NFL remains committed to Sunday's kickoff despite canceled fan events and heightened security concerns across Paris.
The Pittsburgh Steelers and New Orleans Saints are getting prepared to play their Week 7 contest at Stade de Paris on Sunday amid major civil unrest in the City of Love this week.
The NFL has been working with local authorities to make sure the Saints and Steelers are safe this week, and has no plans to alter their schedule for Sunday.
However, local police have taken a drastic action for another sporting event set for Sunday. Per ESPN and the AP, local police decreed a postponement for a soccer match between Paris Saint-Germain and Lyon at Parc des Princes. The match has been moved to Monday evening.
The move comes amid widespread worry for the NFL's contest on Sunday. Per the league, there has been no disruption at league sites this week. The league was aware of the long history of protests in Paris before deciding to have a game hosted there.
Unless something changes, it appears local authorities have more confidence in the security for the contest at Stade de Paris between the Saints and the Steelers than the soccer match at Parc des Princes.
Steelers quarterback Aaron Rodgers believes the NFL is taking care of any security issues this week. If it were truly unsafe, Rodgers thinks the league wouldn't have two of its teams in Paris.
While the game is still on for Sunday, the Steelers had to cancel a fan event at a local bar in the Bastille neighborhood amid protests. That area has seen disruption in recent days.
The key issue for the league and Paris seems to be a site being disrupted. So far, the NFL is in the clear. With that being said, there is a worry that could change if protestors believe they can gain leverage by targeting an NFL game.
The Steelers are worried about business
The Steelers didn't travel to Paris to do sightseeing. The team is looking for their third win in as many weeks when they play the 2-4 Saints on Sunday. Pittsburgh earned a convincing 34-22 win over the Indianapolis Colts in Week 5 before surviving a road game in a 26-19 win over the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in overtime in Week 6.
The Saints have shown flashes of being a good team, but they have not been consistent this season. New Orleans defeated the New York Giants 34-27 in Week 6, and look to stay in the NFC South race with a win over the Steelers.
