As violent civil unrest grips France, the NFL shutters neighborhood fan activities while tightening security protocols ahead of the Steelers’ high-stakes international showdown at Stade de France.

Steelers: Paris Security Concerns Lead to Fan Event Cancellation More Videos

The NFL is planning for the Week 7 game between the Pittsburgh Steelers and New Orleans Saints to go on as scheduled on Sunday in Paris despite widespread civil unrest in the city.

The league has argued that the violent protests are not affecting the NFL sites in France. However, the league is taking some precautions before the event.

Per the AP and ESPN, the NFL and Steelers noted that a fan event for a bar in the Bastille neighborhood has been canceled after recent events in the neighborhood. The league is still continuing to go with the game as planned at Stade de France on Sunday. The NFL is "working closely" with the local officials for security for the game and to protect the Saints and Steelers.

The Steelers noted that there have been no disruptions at NFL sites this week. The fan event is only being canceled out of what they are calling a "precautionary measure" because the nearby area has had disruption in recent days.

NFL commissioner Roger Goodell stated the league made preparations ahead of time. The league was well aware that France has a long history of protests.

Of course, the issue could become more concerning closer to game time. As former NFL quarterback Boomer Esiason reminded his audience earlier this week, protesters could amplify their protest by putting the league in the crosshairs.

The cancellation of the fan event speaks to the fact that the league cannot provide total security in Paris. While the NFL has been cooperating with local authorities to provide a secure environment, those parties did not believe they could provide ample security for the fan event at a local bar.

Imagine then the event that is to occur on Sunday, with even more people hovering in and around Stade de France.

The Pittsburgh Steelers are looking to win a third game in a row.

The Steelers enter Week 7 on a two-game winning streak, defeating the Indianapolis Colts and Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Pittsburgh is set to play a 2-4 Saints team that has shown flashes of great play but has been inconsistent in the early season with second-year quarterback Tyler Shough and head coach Kellen Moore.

A win would be huge for the Steelers to keep pace in the AFC playoff race. Pittsburgh will have to deal with jet lag before hosting the AFC North-leading Cleveland Browns in Week 8.
