As contract negotiations loom, the rising defensive star breaks his silence on a potential training camp hold-in, balancing his desire to play with the realities of NFL business.
Pittsburgh Steelers cornerback Joey Porter Jr. has been active at practice this spring while he waits patiently for a contract extension from the front office and general manager Omar Khan.
That could change in a month before the Steelers embark on a critical juncture with a first-year coaching staff that has orders to run it back with a veteran roster in the upcoming season.
There was speculation Porter would miss mandatory minicamp this week. The 2023 second-round pick has been in attendance and said he wants to be in Latrobe this summer but wouldn't commit to practicing without a contract.
"That's the vision," Porter said, via the Steelers. "I want to be out there. Everybody knows I want to be out there.
"I'm just gonna do everything I can and take it day by day."
While he wants to be out there and the Steelers want Porter out there, there is business to be done that could keep that from happening.
Steelers head coach Mike McCarthy was cautious about how he addressed Porter's situation with the team this spring, noting nothing the cornerback had to do what was necessary to secure his future via a contract extension.
"I think it's like everything in life, frankly," McCarthy said. "There's a personal side to this. There's a professional side to this. And when you break down the professional aspects of being in the NFL as a coach or a player, we all have contracts. When those things occur, I really, frankly just put that into a business category.
"I've been dealing with it for 20 years and it's the same advice I've always given. It's a business situation and do the things you need to do necessary."
Porter played and started in 14 games for the Steelers last season, recording 52 tackles, one interception and 14 passes defensed. He believes he improved at not being penalized as often in 2025.
Porter thinks he's an "elite talent" who is finally getting his respect around the league.
The Steelers signed Nate Herbig to a contract extension this week and are still negotiating with Patrick Queen. It remains to be seen if Pittsburgh focuses on getting a new deal done with Porter before training camp now that Herbig's deal is done.
