When looking at the Pittsburgh Steelers’ roster, there’s one glaring hole.
They have the quarterback in Aaron Rodgers – albeit it may only be for this season, the running back room has been just OK, but there’s no denying the ability of Jaylen Warren, and the defense has held on pretty strong for a corps that’s mostly banged up.
The wide receiver room though, is what’s lacking.
Pro Bowl receiver DK Metcalf’s resume speaks for itself, and he will continue to be a dominant force staring down opposing secondaries.
But what else is out there? Not much.
Though Roman Wilson, who the Steelers selected in the fourth round of the 2023 Draft has the talent and has been getting progressive reps, it initially didn’t look like head coach Mike Tomlin had a lot of faith in him.
But after a solid game against the Packers last Sunday night, there’s hope for a bounceback.
Regardless, even if Wilson does become a receiver that the Steelers can count on, the room is still lacking depth.
Luckily though for Pittsburgh, this upcoming NFL Draft has a solid amount of receivers that would look awfully good in black and gold.
The Draft is a crap shoot and if you ever look up a mock draft on the internet, it’s likely that one player you’re looking at won’t go where you think.
Players rise and fall all the time which is why anything is possible for the Steelers.
Wide receiver Jordyn Tyson from Arizona State is one of the more enticing options in this class, and to the average fan, you may think he lands in the top-10. But Tyson has fallen as low as 12-18 in certain mocks, which is around where the Steelers would be if they keep up their pace.
Another projected early pick is Carnell Tate out of Ohio State, who has been lighting up the scoresheet, especially after a monster game against Penn State where he hauled in five targets on 124 yards and a touchdown..
Denzel Boston from Washington is another option for the Steelers. Boston’s name doesn’t carry the same weight as a Tyson or a Tate, but he’s on pace to crack 1,000 receiving yards and has been projected to go in the late first round.
Regardless, there’s no denying that Pittsburgh needs a tremendous amount of help in its receiver room, even if it may have a solid option in Wilson.
Outside of Metcalf and Wilson, there’s still an opportunity for Calvin Austin to make an impact, but then the Steelers boast Scotty Miller and Ben Skowronek who are depth pieces at best.
Perhaps this isn’t the year for the Steelers to return to glory, but it very well could be a foundational building block to the future.
Even if they do find a way to the playoffs, there will be plenty of receiver help down the road.
