Rookie wideouts Higgins and Noel ignited the Texans' offense, delivering explosive plays in a playoff-clinching victory that will be remembered.
The Houston Texans walked into Sofi Stadium yesterday afternoon with one thought in mind: Win and in. Facing the Los Angeles Chargers and their eighth-best scoring defense (20.1/game), the Texans knew that clinching an AFC Playoff berth in that environment would take one of the best offensive performances of their season.
Little do we know that, not only would the Texans respond to the challenge with flying colors, they did so by deploying two of their most exciting (and arguably most underutilized) rookies on the team.
Yesterday was the official coronation of wide receivers Jayden Higgins and Jaylin Noel as a high-impact duo for the team, and it came at just the right time. Here's how they did:
WR - Jayden Higgins:
4 targets, 2 receptions, 88 yards (44.0 avg), 1 TD
Welcome back, Mr. Higgins! After securing only one catch in each of his last two games, Higgins returned to the offense spectacularly.
During the Texans' first drive, on 3rd and 1 from the Houston 25-yard line, Texans quarterback C.J. Stroud uncorked a 75-yard bomb downfield to a wide open Higgins to kick off the contest. 7-0 Texans after three plays and roughly 1:40 off the game clock.
Higgins being spotlighted so prominently in such a moment should bring relief to anyone concerned about to direction of his use in the Texans' offensive scheme moving forward.
His 88 yards receiving were the most for Higgins in a game in his career, and this was his ninth time with multiple catches in a contest for the season.
The Texans are also now 9-0 in games where Higgins has at least three catches and/or a touchdown reception.
WR/KR - Jaylin Noel:
4 targets, 3 receptions, 54 yards (18.0 avg), 1 TD, 3 ret, 45 yards (15.0 avg)
Yesterday's performance against the Chargers was undoubtedly Noel's greatest act of the season. His previous high point came in week five against the Baltimore Ravens, where he notched the first touchdown catch of his career (and did the "Squirrel dance"). Granted, his moment came with Houston already having a 34-10 lead with 13:54 left in the fourth quarter.
This game was in a different stratosphere though, as it came in the first quarter of an AFC Playoff clinching scenario that wasn't already decided by the time he first touched the ball.
During the second drive of the game, on 1st and 10 from the Chargers' 43-yard line, Stroud launched a 43-yard deep ball towards the left end zone pylon for Noel to cross the formation and track down.
He was successful, as the former Iowa State Cyclone galloped into the painted area to give the Texans a 14-0 lead with 9:17 left in the first quarter.
His 54 yards on the day is the second most in a game in his career, along with his touchdown catch being the second of his career. His three catches on the day were also his most in a game since his two receptions in week 14 against the Kansas City Chiefs.
Noel has shown flashes of his potential against teams like the Seattle Seahawks, San Francisco 49ers and Arizona Cardinals. However, this was the first time all year that Noel was featured as an early priority piece in the game planning of offensive coordinator Nick Caley. The return on investment was well worth the risk, and the team benefited greatly.
Noel's deep threat ability adds yet another dimension to the offense as they head into the postseason. Time will tell if his place in the passing attack is truly set in stone.
