Texans desperately need offensive line upgrades. Wyatt Teller, a proven All-Pro guard, becomes a game-changing free agency prize offering immediate elite play.

According to multiple reports, Cleveland Browns all-pro right guard Wyatt Teller has decided that 2025 would be his final season with the team, as he would be exploring free agency.

A three-time Pro bowler (2021-2023) and two-time all pro (2020 and 2021), Teller was a fifth-round pick by the Buffalo Bills in 2018 who was then traded to the Browns in 2019. Seven seasons later, Teller will be venturing into the NFL marketplace for an opportunity to presumably compete for a championship.

Perfect Timing for a Needy Team

The timing is impeccable for the Houston Texans, because they just so happen to be on the hunt for multiple improvements across their offense this offseason.

Specifically, the team is looking for upgrades in the interior of their offensive line, as the club has had to depend on a rotation of names like Jarrett Patterson, Jake Andrews and Juice Scruggs while trying to compete for a Super Bowl in 2025.

So far, the only concrete starting names on the offensive line depth chart so far are Aireontae Ersery (left tackle) and Tytus Howard (guard/right tackle). Besides those two, speculation has swirled on whether or not Houston will re-sign free agents Ed Ingram and Trent Brown, as well as whether or not Jake Andrews will have the chance to contend for the starting center position come training camp time.

Quality Acquisition

Teller would immediately step in as the most accomplished offensive lineman since the days of franchise legend Duane Brown (traded to the Seattle Seahawks in 2017). That would be nine seasons since Houston has truly known elite level play along the offensive line. It's been far too long.

According to Spotrac, Teller is projected to warrant a contract in the ballpark of three years, $36 million (roughly 12 million APY). Being 31 years old, Teller is still plenty young enough to represent an impact investment towards reaching new organizational heights in Houston.

Learning From Recent History

The offensive line has been an issue for Houston for the last two years, whether it be due to sacks given up, below average run blocking or not being able to pick up stunts/blitzes.

Sometimes it's been perceived as a coaching issue, while other times personnel has been blamed. Regardless, Teller's availability, along with more names to come, signals a golden opportunity for the Texans to take the plunge and invest premium assets into one of the biggest weaknesses of the team.

The Chicago Bears did the same thing before the 2025 regular season, trading for high-quality guards in both All-Pro Joe Thuney (Kansas City Chiefs) and Pro Bowler Jonah Jackson. The cost to acquire them made the moves even better, with Thuney being acquired for just a 2026 fourth-rounder and Jackson for a 2025 sixth-rounder.

The moves were received with much admiration, considering the Bears were trying to build around their young franchise signal caller Caleb Williams.

If Houston wants to reverse their fortunes on offense, they need the same aggressive approach.
