The Houston Texans find themselves at the center of running back conversations heading into NFL free agency on March 11th. After finishing with a rushing attack that placed as one of the worst in football in 2025, vast improvement in 2026 is of high priority to the organization.
Along the way to said improvement, there are questions that need to be answered in order to navigate their way to an effective solution.
Will they release running back Joe Mixon? Is Woody Marks a viable number one option in the backfield? Is there a gamebreaker for Houston in the draft? Who will they target in free agency? These are several trains of thought that exist within the Texan media space as the offseason carries on.
One name in particular is New York Jets franchise running back Breece Hall, who just completed his fourth year with the team while finally eclipsing the 1,000-yard mark for the first time.
In 2026, he will be a free agent and is allowed to sign with any team he chooses once the new league year starts in a little over two weeks.
Nick Shook of NFL.com covered Hall's approach to impending free agency,
"You know, I don't know," Hall said Saturday, via the New York Post. "I've addressed this for the last six, seven months now. But now I'm just kind of like whatever happens, happens."
Shook of went on to say of Hall's impact with the Jets,
"Hall has proven to be a home run hitter in the running and passing game when healthy"
Hall himself went on to express confidence in the future of his career by expressing,
"I'm just where my feet are, and letting God and my agent handle everything else," he said. "I feel like my play speaks for itself, considering the situations I've been in the last few years. I'm going to get everything that's coming to me, so I'm not too worried about it."
As Houston still continues sorting out financials and general offseason planning, players like Hall will continue to stick out like a sore thumb for a team that so urgently needs a bell cow back.
For Houston, he would help take the defensive pressure off quarterback C.J. Stroud in year four and help to stabilize a rushing attack that was anemic last season.
As much as Hall would be a great addition to the team, there are still hurdles to clear. One of them would be the Jets reportedly looking to slap one of their franchise tags on Hall in hopes of either getting a long-term deal done or securing some draft compensation before he leaves New York permanently.
If that happens, Houston's interest in the back may cool off (assuming they're interested), as they have several rushing alternatives to consider in free agency and the draft (Tyler Allgeier, Rico Dowdle, Travis Etienne, Jadarian Price, Jonah Coleman, etc.)
