Can Houston's struggling offense finally find its stride? Dive into the numbers and see the potential for improvement with four games remaining.

Through 14 weeks of play, all the attention of the NFL world has been on Houston's monstrous defense and how it has neutralized every offense it has faced. It's proven fact at this point, one of the primary reasons for the Texans' five-game winning streak and mid-season turnaround from 0-3 to 8-5 is the performance of one of the greatest defenses in the last 15 years, orchestrated by head coach Demeco Ryans and defensive coordinator Matt Burke.

However, for as much praise and acknowledgment that Houston's defense has received, an equal amount of skepticism and criticism has befallen their counterparts on the offensive side of the ball, managed by first-year offensive coordinator Nick Caley. The defense has dragged Caley's unit kicking and screaming to the 7th seed in the AFC, but that shouldn't be the narrative for an offense that was completely overhauled in the offseason.

To get new Texans Roundtable readers up to speed on things, here's what the offense has produced through their first 13 games of the season:

Los Angeles Rams: 265 total yards (114 rush, 152 pass), 18 first downs, 0 TDs, 9 points

Tampa Bay Buccaneers: 266 total yards (84 rush, 182 pass), 12 first downs, 2 TDs, 19 points

Jacksonville Jaguars: 271 total yards (87 rush, 184 pass), 13 first downs, 1 TD, 10 points

Tennessee Titans: 353 total yards (129 rush, 224 pass), 20 first downs, 3 TDs, 26 points

Baltimore Ravens: 417 total yards (167 rush, 250 pass), 27 first downs, 5 TDs, 44 points

Seattle Seahawks: 254 total yards (56 rush, 198 pass), 18 first downs, 1 TD, 19 points

San Francisco 49ers: 475 total yards (157 rush, 318 pass), 23 first downs, 2 TDs, 26 points

Denver Broncos: 268 total yards (77 rush, 191 pass), 15 first downs, 0 TDs, 15 points

Jacksonville Jaguars: 412 total yards (130 rush, 282 pass), 27 first downs, 4 TDs, 36 points

Tennessee Titans: 315 total yards (75 rush, 240 pass), 20 first downs, 1 TD, 16 points

Buffalo Bills: 261 total yards (108 rush, 153 pass), 15 first downs, 2 TDs, 23 points

Indianapolis Colts: 364 total yards (108 rush, 256 pass), 24 first downs, 2 TDs, 20 points

Kansas City Chiefs: 268 total yards (82 rush, 186 pass), 14 first downs, 2 TDs, 20 points

Season Averages:

  • 322.2 tot yds/game (20th)
  • 216.5 pass yds/game (16th)
  • 105.7 rush yds/game (23rd)
  • 21.8pts/game (20th)

Inconsistency Abounds

According to a variety of metrics, the Texans' offense is ranked anywhere from average to below average on any given Sunday. To be fair, they didn't have the services of starting quarterback C.J. Stroud for weeks 10-12 due to a concussion suffered in week nine against the Denver Broncos.

Yet, even before Stroud's absence, Caley and co. still struggled with an inconsistent run game, sputtering drives, untimely interceptions and an inability to convert in the red zone.

Houston Has Faced Stiff Competition

As far as quality of opponents, Houston has actually faced five* top-10 defenses throughout their schedule in the Jaguars, Seahawks, Broncos, Bills and Chiefs (*Jaguars are only 3.3 yards shy of 10th, so they were included). Thus, this could explain some of Houston's offensive misfiring.

Looking at the final four games for Houston, the team only faces one more top-10 defense. That would be the Los Angeles Chargers' unit in week 17 (they're fourth overall at 282.2 yds/game). Other than that, they face the 24th (Cardinals), 16th (Raiders) and 23rd (Colts) ranked defensive units to close the regular season.

  • Against non top-10 overall defenses, Houston is 5-2.
  • Against top-10 overall ranked defenses, Houston is 3-3.
  • Against non top-10 scoring defenses, Houston is 5-1.
  • Against top-10 scoring defenses, Houston is 3-4.

With the next two contests being against the Cardinals and Raiders, Houston has a chance to establish a much more formidable offense as they remain in the AFC South hunt (while clinging to the seventh seed in the AFC).
