From sleek uniforms to a gray-furred makeover, the Tennessee Titans have finally overhauled their iconic raccoon mascot, signaling the end of an era for Nashville’s faithful fans.
The Tennessee Titans played their first season in Nashville in 1999 at Adelphia Coliseum.
The franchise ditched the Houston Oilers colors for the navy-blue home jerseys with light blue shoulders. The Titans' away jerseys were white in the middle with the same light blue on the shoulder pads, but with navy pants.
It was a new era for the franchise, as the Oilers moved from Houston to Nashville. Starting in that 1999 season, the Titans welcomed their mascot, "T-Rac," a raccoon with a jersey that signified the state mammal.
The mascot had brown fur with black fur around its eyes. It's not typically how a raccoon looks in the wild, but who cares?
Is T-Rac an interesting mascot for a team that is tied to Greek mythology? Sure, but he was ours. Titans fans had a weird, lovable mascot of their own to claim.
Over the years, the Titans have rebranded many times, but their beloved mascot has remained unchanged.
The team started using the "Titans Blue" in 2018, ditching the colors that the franchise had worn for many years since its inception in 1999.
Then, this past year, the Titans rebranded again to honor the Oilers' legacy. The home jerseys pay homage to the Oilers' blue, and the away jerseys are white with that same blue on the numbers.
The logo is shifting from the flame with the "T" and three stars for the state's main cities to a minimalistic version. The new logo consists of the Oiler blue with a "T" in the middle with the tri-stars.
There was concern that the Titans would try to change how T-Rac looked with the new uniforms and logo debuting for the 2026 season. Up until Friday, T-Rac looked the same.
T-Rac announced his new look on his X account.
T-Rac now looks more like your typical raccoon would. His fur is now gray, and he will wear the new jersey during games.
The Titans now have a new stadium on the way, new uniforms, a new logo, and a new look for their mascot.
It was time for a rebrand, but for most of us who grew up with the old T-Rac, this move hurts a little.
There's going to be a new generation of Titans fans who will never know what the old T-Rac looked like on game days. All they will see is the newer version and assume that's how he's always been.
I understand that this was inevitable, given the way the franchise was heading with the new uniforms and logo, but keeping T-Rac the same would've gone a long way with fans who have been keeping up with this team since the early days.
T-Rac didn't make the most sense for the Titans, but his old look is how fans like me have known him for years. That history is now going to be erased with this latest rebrand.
It's a bittersweet moment for Titans fans as the franchise continues to move into the modern era.
