From coaching shakeups to a winless start, Miami standout Cam Ward faces a grueling path in Tennessee as he navigates the immense pressure of his top-pick status.
The Tennessee Titans selected Cam Ward out of Miami with the No. 1 overall pick in the 2025 NFL Draft.
Let's detail how that journey has gone for him so far.
He walked into a pretty rough situation in his first year. The Titans didn't have many reliable weapons for him to throw to. His head coach, Brian Callahan, was fired halfway through his rookie season.
Ward then had to learn under interim HC Mike McCoy, but he kept his head down and slowly started to improve. He finished his rookie season with 3,169 passing yards, 15 touchdowns and seven interceptions.
There was a lot of hype surrounding him heading into year two. With a new head coach and offensive coordinator, and better players around him, it looked like he was going to be in a better situation.
So far, Ward has struggled to live up to those expectations. He's thrown for 869 passing yards, three touchdowns and three interceptions in five games.
The Titans are 0-5, and there have been calls to bench Ward. Robert Saleh has said there are no plans to bench Ward, but it's not where many people expected the quarterback to be in his second year.
The road was never going to be easy for a No. 1 overall pick. There's a reason the Titans were in that position.
Ward was asked at a recent press conference if he expected things to be easier as a No. 1 overall pick. He didn't expect it to be easy and understands what life is supposed to be like in the NFL.
"No, it's not going to be easy," Ward said. "We're in the NFL. We're the one percent for a reason. But I mean, I think it'd be different. We executed plays. If I executed plays at a high level, then everyone in the building executing at a high level. I think when, you know, they drafted me, it was one of the best days ever. I get to go to an organization that didn't have, you know, the wins, the championships that everybody have and, you know, I get to be a part of it, you know, when we get a chance to turn it around."
No, it hasn't been the start many Titans fans were hoping for. Cam is still happy to be here when things turn around.
He's been in this situation before, going back to his rookie year. Ward showed plenty of promise and proved he deserved an investment from the franchise.
Saleh is sticking with Ward for now, and hopefully, this team will start to get back to winning ways eventually.
The Titans are proof that just because they followed the same blueprint as the Washington Commanders and New England Patriots doesn't mean they're guaranteed the same results.
A big investment in free agency after going in with the most money to spend doesn't mean that the Titans are going to be a playoff team.
Just like how Ward isn't guaranteed to have an easy team in the NFL because he's a former No. 1 overall pick. At the end of the day, nothing is guaranteed in this league, whether it's health or wins.
