Despite coaching upheaval and a thin roster, Tennessee's top pick flashed elite poise. After dominating late-season stat sheets, the rising star enters Year 2 with revamped offensive weapons.
The Tennessee Titans took Cam Ward No. 1 overall in the 2025 NFL Draft.
The situation he was thrown into wasn't ideal for a rookie quarterback.
Head coach Brian Callahan didn't make it a full season with Ward before being fired after the Week 6 loss to the Las Vegas Raiders. He was then mentored by interim HC Mike McCoy for the remainder of the season.
His receivers last season were Calvin Ridley, Van Jefferson, Tyler Lockett, Chimere Dike, Elic Ayomanor, Mason Kinsey and Bryce Oliver.
Despite the odds, Ward showed a lot of promise.
He threw for 3,169 passing yards, 15 touchdowns and seven interceptions. He led the NFL in touchdown-to-interception ratio (10) from Weeks 10-18.
People took notice of how Ward performed in the face of a bad situation, and NFL.com's Nick Shook ranked him among other quarterbacks who were also on rookie deals.
Ward came in at No. 6 and ranked ahead of Bryce Young, Jaxson Dart, Tyler Shough, Fernando Mendoza, Michael Penix Jr., Aidan O'Connell, J.J. McCarthy, Shedeur Sanders and Ty Simpson.
Shook thinks Ward will take a step forward in 2026.
"Given the circumstances into which Ward was dropped as a rookie, he performed quite well," Shook said. "Cam joined a team lacking legitimate threats at receiver and in need of multiple offseason cycles' worth of talent acquisition, yet he found a way to maximize the Titans' abilities in most games. The results weren't visible in Tennessee's overall record (3-14), but they're plentiful in the game tape. On a weekly basis, Ward was good for a few highlight throws, handled the speed of the game well, and didn't allow the typical rookie mistakes to bury him. I expect him to continue to take steps forward in Year 2."
Now, Ward has an improved cast of receivers in 2026. The Titans added Carnell Tate in the 2026 NFL Draft and signed former New York Giants receiver Wan'Dale Robinson in free agency.
Tate is something that the Titans haven't had in a while as a deep threat at receiver. He has a real chance of being a No. 1 WR with the Titans.
Robinson comes into a better situation with the Titans compared to the Giants that should allow him to feel less pressure.
Ridley had a down year in 2025, even before his season-ending injury. He looked like a shell of his former self, struggling with multiple drops throughout last season.
Ward's offensive line will look different this season. Lloyd Cushenberry and Kevin Zeitler left the team this offseason.
Austin Schlottmann and Cordell Volson were brought in during free agency to compete for starting jobs at center and right guard.
The Titans are a different team from when Ward first suited up as a rookie in 2025. We'll see if it's enough to help him ascend to another level in 2026.
