After an abysmal offensive display against the Jets, quarterback Cam Ward demands accountability and promises a swift turnaround to keep Tennessee’s Super Bowl aspirations alive.
Tennessee Titans quarterback Cam Ward and the offense were abysmal on Sunday.
He would probably tell you that himself.
The Jets had 19 first downs and the Titans 11. The Jets also ran 63 plays, 14 more than the Titans.
Cam Ward finished with 140 passing yards, and the team had 68 rushing yards as a whole. The Jets were actually worse at converting third downs than the Titans.
New York went 2-of-12, and the Titans were 4-of-12. The Titans had 195 total yards of offense to the Jets' 367.
If you were looking for a silver lining on offense, there really wasn't one that came to mind. The Titans weren't even the more physical team throughout the game.
Ward tried to offer hope to Titans fans after a brutal 23-10 loss to the Jets on opening weekend.
One thing he left Titans fans with at Sunday's press conference was that they wouldn't let this loss define the rest of their season.
Ward started his thoughts after he was asked about the Titans expecting more man defense during the game. He quickly noted that it wasn't an excuse for how poorly the team played.
"Yeah, it was the case. We were expecting, you know, man coverage. They played to what we expected on third down. But first and second down, they got to Tampa, they played a little bit of buzz. But, you know, that's not an excuse. We still got to go out there and react to what the defense is doing. We still got to pick up pressures. I still got to put the protection in the right way. And for us, it's, you know, how can we take this? How can we learn from it? And how can we not derail us from the goal? Our goal is to, you know, get in the playoffs, have a chance at, you know, winning a Super Bowl. And you know one week is not going to be a defined moment. That is just continuing to get better each and every day."
While it was an unfortunate end to the last home opener at Nissan Stadium, the Titans still have 16 more games to improve and become a better football team.
If the season was decided today, it wouldn't look good for the Titans. Luckily, that's not how it works in the NFL.
The Titans will have many more opportunities to show growth under Robert Saleh this year.
Next up are the Philadelphia Eagles in Week 2. The Titans will have a chance to defend their home turf once again on Sept. 20.
