After a massive free-agency spending spree and coaching overhaul, quarterback Cam Ward spoke his mind at Titans minicamp.
The Tennessee Titans were fed up consecutive 3-14 finishes over the last two years.
General Manager Mike Borgonzi was hired in January of 2025 and saw enough of last year's disappointment to know that big changes were needed.
After hiring former San Francisco 49ers defensive coordinator Robert Saleh as head coach, he brought out the pocketbook in free agency.
The most significant additions were John Franklin-Myers, Wan'Dale Robinson, Alontae Taylor, and Cor'Dale Flott, among many others, in free agency.
He then gave the Titans several promising rookies in the 2026 NFL Draft, with Carnell Tate, Keldric Faulk, Anthony Hill Jr., Fernando Carmona, Nicholas Singleton, Pat Coogan, Jackie Marshall and Jaren Kanak.
Even before the draft, it became clear that the Titans weren't messing around after their free-agent moves. Borgonzi is aiming for a quick rebuild similar to that of the Washington Commanders and New England Patriots.
Both of those franchises spent an enormous amount of money in free agency after winning four games the year before. Then, the Commanders reached the NFC Championship Game in 2024, and the Patriots made it to the Super Bowl last season.
We've known that the Titans want a quick turnaround for a while, but Cam Ward confirmed this team's mindset heading into Saleh's first season.
After the first day of minicamp on Tuesday, Ward spoke to the media and stated that the time for breaks is over. This Titans team wants to compete for a playoff spot and the AFC South title.
"Just got to go," Ward said. "Just got to work out. Just got to get up and go each and every day. You got 40 days to start camp. So, you know, the break is for us, January to February, maybe early March. There's no more time for breaks for nobody in the locker room. We just go to go. We're behind the eight ball. We had the number four pick last year. That's our goal. Not to be in the top 15 picks. We want to be later. That means we get a chance at the playoffs. We get a chance to win the division. That's our goal each and every year."
This is a fiery statement from Ward, but it's nothing new in the NFL. Every team wants to do the same thing every year, but to hear this from Ward for the first time means that things just got real.
However, after the Titans' investment in several talents this offseason, we thought the same thing. Now, Ward has said out loud what we've all been thinking.
Some rebuilds can take time.
We've seen teams finally get over the hump after years of draft picks and free-agent acquisitions. For the Titans, that isn't an option.
The Music City is home to some very passionate fans, and they are ready to see this team be one of the best in the NFL once again.
The Titans are in win-now mode and won't take no for an answer. Ward just echoed what many fans have thought for months now.
The Tennessee Titans mean business.
