As both teams hunt for their first win, the Titans face a secondary shuffle while awaiting a final call on breakout receiver Carnell Tate’s back injury.
It's rivalry week for the Tennessee Titans as they prepare to face the Houston Texans at Nissan Stadium on Sunday.
Both teams enter the weekend at 0-4, searching for their first win of the season. The Titans desperately need momentum to carry them through a tough stretch over the next few weeks.
They start divisional play against the Texans, then take on the Indianapolis Colts and Cleveland Browns. The Cincinnati Bengals and Jacksonville Jaguars await them to kick off November.
Before they worry about that, the Titans had injury updates on Friday. On the final injury report, there were a lot of names. Luckily for the Titans, most of the players were cleared for kickoff.
Let's start with the three players listed as questionable. The main player to watch this week has been Carnell Tate.
Tate didn't initially appear on Wednesday's injury report. He was added on Thursday with back issues. Tate was ruled questionable for the game, but there's a silver lining after what head coach Robert Saleh said.
Saleh said that the Titans were all clear at Friday's press conference. This is great news for the team, considering Tate had a monster game in Week 4 against the Baltimore Ravens, leading the Titans with 145 receiving yards.
Cornerback Joshua Williams was also questionable. He has battled a pectoral issue all week. Williams has yet to play for the Titans since picking up the injury toward the end of the preseason.
He was placed on the injured reserve, and based on Saleh's comments, he looks good to go for Sunday. Williams joined the Titans in March after four years with the Kansas City Chiefs.
If anything, he'll provide valuable depth in the secondary.
The only other player listed as questionable was tight end David Martin-Robinson. He's been a useful blocker for the Titans this year, playing in four games and starting one.
Saleh said that Martin-Robinson is a toss-up for the game.
The Titans will be without a starter against the Texans. Safety Amani Hooker made the mistake of trying to tackle Derrick Henry straight up in the last game and paid for it.
He went to the sideline to be checked for a concussion and returned to the game. Afterward, it was revealed that he did, in fact, get a concussion. Hooker couldn't clear concussion protocol and will miss the Texans game.
The good news is that no other players were listed OUT. John Franklin-Myers (back), Marcus Harris (knee/ankle), Gunnar Helm (knee), Tony Pollard (foot), Jeffery Simmons (back) and Kevin Winston Jr. (shoulder) didn't carry injury designations.
A win over the Texans can give this team the momentum they need to turn things around and get back to winning football games. It was a little scary to see how many players appeared on the injury report early in the week.
It looks like most of it was precautionary.
The Titans and Texans meet at Nissan Stadium on Sunday at noon CT on CBS.
