Tennessee’s recent tryouts signal a potential shakeup on special teams as the team weighs alternatives to an inconsistent player.
The Tennessee Titans held practices on Saturday and Sunday after their blue-and-white scrimmage on Friday night.
There wasn't really anything out of the ordinary that happened over the weekend, except that the team decided to work out three different players. Normally, this wouldn't be a cause for concern, but after looking at the position of all the players, it may mean that the team is going in a different direction with special teams.
According to Arye Pulli of The Saints Wire, the Titans worked out kickers Younghoe Koo, John Hoyland and John Parker Romo.
Does this mean that the Titans are trying to part ways with kicker Joey Slye?
Slye took over as the Titans' kicker after the team decided not to re-sign Nick Folk. Folk was a very efficient kicker in the two years he spent with the Titans. From 2023-24, Folk only missed two extra points and field goals.
His longest field goal make with Tennessee was 56 yards in 2024.
After Folk left the Titans, he joined the New York Jets on a one-year deal worth $2.875 million. He made 28-of-29 field goals and all of his extra points last season with the Jets.
The Jets didn't want to re-sign him either, and he is now on a two-year deal with the Atlanta Falcons.
The move to Folk let go didn't make sense for the Titans, given the team's recent history of kicking blunders.
In 2019, the Titans couldn't seem to find a reliable kicker.
Tennessee had Cairo Santos, Ryan Succop, Cody Parkey, Greg Joseph and Ryan Santoso all kick that season.
Slye was reliable at times, but he struggled with accuracy, too. Last season, he made 28-of-35 field goal attempts, putting his percentage at 80%. If the Titans are looking for replacements, it would make sense why they'd want to.
If the Titans really want to move on from Slye, let's look at the replacements. Koo had better accuracy early in his career, but he's started to decline in recent years.
Koo's career-high field goal percentage was 94.1% in 2020. From 2019-2023, his field goal percentage never dipped below 85%. However, he hit 73.6% of his field goals in 2024 and had a 66.7% last season before being benched by the Atlanta Falcons.
The Falcons eventually parted ways with Koo, and he landed with the New York Giants. The Giants released him, and he was signed by the Jets earlier this offseason, but he was waived on June 3.
The Falcons used Romo as their kicker after they released Koo. Romo was 11-of-14 on his field goals for a percentage of 78.6%. The Falcons eventually picked up Zane Gonzalez instead, and Romo was waived.
Then, there's Hoyland.
Hoyland went undrafted in 2025 and signed with the Baltimore Ravens. He eventually lost the starting job to Tyler Loop and was waived last August.
After his brief stint with the Ravens, he tried his hand in the UFL with the Houston Gamblers. He made 18 of his 22 field goal attempts for a percentage of 81.8.
The Titans have options if they aren't satisfied with Slye. Finding a reliable kicker in the NFL isn't easy.
This could signal the end of Slye's time in Nashville.
