Beyond quarterback development, a shared fiery temperament has forged an instant bond between the rising star and his new mentor as Tennessee surrounds their passer with elite weapons.
The Tennessee Titans knew that with a young quarterback like Cam Ward, they would need someone to mentor him along the way.
Robert Saleh brought in offensive coordinator Brian Daboll for that exact purpose. Daboll has a proven track record with young quarterbacks, helping Josh Allen, Daniel Jones and even Jaxson Dart at times reach their full potential.
The Titans have upgraded the receiver room tremendously compared to where it was a year ago. Wan'Dale Robinson and Carnell Tate are the two newest receivers for Ward to throw to.
Robinson is familiar with Daboll's offense and comes in after a breakout 1,000-yard season in 2025. Tate is in a position to be the Titans' WR1 with the abilities he brings from his time at Ohio State.
The Titans can bring in all the Daboll disciples they want, but it's obvious that Ward is going to be the most important for him to use on offense. That's how it should be, since Ward is the starting quarterback.
It seems that there was another reason Saleh brought Daboll on as his OC. Ward and Daboll are very similar people.
Ward shared this in an interview with Voice of the Titans, Taylor Zarzour, on SiriusXM. Ward said that he and Daboll are the same person because they can both be hot-headed at times.
"It is. We're a perfect match," Ward said. "We're actually, you know, the same person. He's just the older version of it. We're both hotheads. We both get to that point. But he's taught me to be more calmer. And it's just how I handle stuff, you know, on the field. Even though I handled it the right way, but, you know, the biggest thing that we preach is keep it tight. We're gonna have bad plays. We're gonna have spurts, but there also is a time where I have to, you know, get on somebody's *** or not, but, you know, it's also a time where, you know, in bad plays, and that's the perfect time for me to lead and just motivate them and not try to push them too hard. Because they make a bad play, they already think about it, so I don't need to continue to emphasize it. That's something he's helped me on, seeing that side of his point of view."
It helps that Daboll is a quarterback guru of sorts, but even more so that he and Ward have very similar personalities.
We knew that Daboll was brought in because of his past with developing quarterbacks, but it appears that there was another reason that fans didn't necessarily know of.
This could go a long way toward Ward's development as he enters year two with the Titans.
Why not learn from someone like yourself?
