The veteran safety embraces a vocal leadership role while mastering a new 4-3 system designed to maximize his playmaking ability and mentorship within a revamped Tennessee secondary.

Tennessee Titans safety Amani Hooker is entering his eighth season playing for the franchise in 2026.

He was drafted out of Iowa in 2019 and has had multiple defensive coordinators during his time in the NFL.

He started with Dean Pees as a rookie. Then, Pees retired in 2020, and head coach Mike Vrabel took over the defense with Shane Bowen as the play-caller.

Bowen became the Titans' DC in 2021 and held down the position through the 2023 season. Vrabel was fired after that season, and Brian Callahan brought in Dennard Wilson as DC.

Now, Hooker is learning from another DC.

This time it's former Jacksonville Jaguars head coach Gus Bradley, but it's still Robert Saleh's 4-3 scheme. As a defensive-minded head coach, Saleh will have a big role in the defense as well.

Hooker gave Titans fans a scare just before training camp. He was added to the PUP list before training camp with right tackle J.C. Latham.

Hooker was removed from the list pretty quickly and has been able to practice ever since, which is great considering he is one of the returning starters from last year's defense.

He'll be needed to mentor the new faces and second-year players who are back in the secondary. The Titans added Alontae Taylor and Cor'Dale Flott in free agency and have Marcus Harris, Kevin Winston Jr. and Micah Robinson back for another year.

Hooker will especially need to help Winston Jr. if he's going to start alongside him at safety.

Still, Hooker is slowly starting to pick up Saleh's 4-3 scheme. He noted Tuesday at the press conference that it plays to his strengths as a safety.

"I think it fits very well," Hooker said. "I mean, being able to communicate with guys, putting guys in good positions to, you know, make plays all across the board."

If there's anyone who needs to pick up this system quickly, it's Hooker. Ever since the Titans traded Kevin Byard to the Philadelphia Eagles at the deadline in the 2023 season, Hooker has been expected to be the strong, veteran presence at safety.

Now more than ever, it's time for him to embrace that role and be a vocal leader. He's not the only one learning this new system. Taylor, Flott, Harris, Robinson and Winston are all doing the same.

Taylor and Flott are NFL veterans, but they are still in their first season with the Titans.

Whether he wants to admit it or not, Hooker is going to play a big role on defense this season.
