After overcoming a scary shoulder injury and silencing training camp skeptics, the young passer has earned his coach's praise for his elite mental toughness and relentless competitive drive.
It hasn't been a picture-perfect offseason for Tennessee Titans quarterback Cam Ward as he prepares for his second year in the league.
For starters, he had to recover from his scary injury at the end of the regular season. Ward had a rushing touchdown in the first quarter against the Jacksonville Jaguars, but had a player land on his throwing shoulder.
He exited the game and returned in street clothes, with his arm in a sling. It would later be revealed that he suffered an AC Joint sprain, the same injury Will Levis had and played through in the 2024 season.
Levis missed all of last season due to surgery to repair the injury, and fans feared the worst for Ward.
Fortunately, Ward was able to make a full recovery and throw in time for OTAs. Titans' fans breathed a huge sigh of relief, but then there was a change of heart from some.
After a rough week of practice for Ward later in the year, people started to have doubts about the young quarterback. Some even called him a bust before he played in his second NFL season.
Ward bounced back the following week of practice, putting the doubters in their place. Regardless, throughout the ups and downs of Ward's offseason, head coach Robert Saleh has stood firm on his view on the young passer.
In a recent interview with Voice of the Titans, Taylor Zarzour, we got a better idea of how Saleh feels about Ward.
"He's been great. I love his competitiveness," Saleh said. "He is a tremendously gifted football player and he's still learning a lot about himself, you know, just having conversations with him in the weight room and just talking football with him and the things he's talking about and recognizing and things that he needs to get better at. He's relentlessly in pursuit to try to be the best version of himself every day, not just physically, but mentally. And you know, I've said it before, guys like him, they don't fail. I've said it a million times to anyone who wants to talk to me, man. The Tennessee Titans are in good hands with this dude."
Saleh went on to explain what he meant by using a golf analogy. He said that Ward is one of the best people at forgetting about a bad hole of golf.
"You know, some people in other sports, whether they're professional or they're recreational like you and me on the golf course, we have a had time forgetting about a bad hole," Saleh said. "To put it in golf terms, and I know a lot of people watching will appreciate this. He is as good as I've ever seen at forgetting about a bad hole."
Ward is definitely not a perfect quarterback. No one is. Even the best players at the position in this league make mistakes from time to time.
He made plenty of rookie mistakes last season and is bound to make more mistakes in 2026, even though he now has one year of NFL experience.
That's just how the NFL is.
However, his ability to not let his mistakes affect him is going to take him far in the NFL. This is just further proof that he was the perfect quarterback for the Titans to select in the 2025 NFL Draft.
